Lynnard Baker Jr., 17

Lynnard Baker Jr., a 17-year-old black man, died Thursday, Feb. 2, two days after he was shot in the 5300 block of Rodeo Road in Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Baker and another person tried to break into the home shortly after 9 p.m. Tuesday. As Baker entered through a window, the commotion surprised the homeowner, who retrieved his gun.

Fearing for his life, the homeowner shot Baker as he was climbing through the window. The second suspect then fled.

Authorities were called and Baker was taken to Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in critical condition.

Despite treatment, he succumbed to his injuries several days later, said LAPD Criminal Gang Homicide Det. Mike Applegate, who is handling the case.

Coroner's records show Baker died from a gunshot wound to the head.

Investigators are still searching for the second suspect, who faces felony burglary charges.

Authorities said the homeowner, who was acting in self-defense, is not expected to be charged with any crime.

Anyone with information about this incident or the identity of the second burglar is asked to contact Det. Applegate at (213) 485-4341. Tipsters wishing to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
