A story for every victim

Man sentenced to 9 years in 2013 beating death

Roy Lee Adams, a 67-year-old black man, was sentenced Aug. 5 to nine years in state prison for a March 2013 killing in Koreatown, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

On July 23, Adams pleaded guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter in the beating death of Cornelius Rich.

Rich, a 62-year-old black man, was found dead March 19, 2013, in the 500 block of Kingsley Drive, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

His body was found by his landlord more than a week after he was killed after residents complained of a foul smell coming from his apartment.

DNA pulled off a small piece of latex, found on the victim’s pants, linked Adams to the crime. A match was made in the national law enforcement DNA database that belonged to Adams, according to authorities.

Adams and Rich had seemed to be friends, but the motive for the killing appeared to be robbery, officials said.
