Man sentenced in Skid Row death

A Los Angeles man was sentenced Sept. 12, 2008, to state prison for stomping a woman to death on skid row in May 2006, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Gregory George Hampton, 55, was sentenced to 17 years to life.

In late March, after a day’s deliberation, a jury found Hampton guilty of the second-degree murder of Kristi Marie Morales.

On May 3, 2006, Hampton knocked Morales, 49, to the ground and viciously stomped her for several minutes in the 300 block of East 5th Street in downtown Los Angeles. Deputy Dist. Atty. John Niedermann said a motive for the attack was not known.

Police said a passerby attempted to intervene three times, but each time, the suspect knocked the Good Samaritan to the ground and continued beating Morales.

Eventually, the passerby flagged a passing police officer, who arrested Hampton.

Morales died five days later after being taken off of life support.
