A story for every victim

Marc Garcia, 18

Marc Garcia, an 18-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Saturday, Aug. 5, in the 1100 block of South Long Beach Boulevard in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Garcia and his friend Andres Cardenas, 20, had car problems that afternoon and had pulled into the parking lot of the Travel Plaza Inn to try to make repairs, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.

As the two were working, a silver, 2000 Honda Civic drove into the parking lot at 4:05 p.m., Mendoza said.

Two Latino adults in dark clothing got out of the car and began shooting at Cardenas and Garcia, Mendoza said. The gunmen then got back in the Honda and fled north on Long Beach Boulevard, he said.

Garcia was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:50 p.m., according to coroner’s records. Cardenas was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:17 p.m. The cause of death for both men was listed as multiple gunshot wounds, according to coroner’s records.

Garcia and Cardenas were gang members who lived in Compton, Mendoza said. Investigators believe the shooting was gang related.

The gunmen were in a stolen car that was abandoned a few blocks from the motel, Mendoza said. Investigators discovered that the car had been reported stolen a week earlier.
