A story for every victim

Maria Yslas, 82

Maria Yslas, an 82-year-old Latina, died Saturday, May 7, after she was beaten in the 300 block of South Woods Avenue in East Los Angeles, according to coroner’s records.

Yslas was in the home she shared with her daughter, granddaughter and great-grandchildren on May 6, when her granddaughter allegedly began to hit her, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Det. Theo Baljet.

“As far as we can tell, she got upset at her grandma and beat her up,” said Baljet. “She punched her and kicked her and possibly choked her.”

Yslas was taken to the hospital that evening with multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at 10:22 a.m. the following day, according to coroner’s records.

The granddaughter, Rebecca Surratt, a 25-year-old black woman, was arrested that evening and charged with murder.

Surratt is scheduled to be arraigned May 23 in Department 30 of the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center in downtown Los Angeles, said L.A. County district attorney's office spokesman Greg Risling. She is being held in lieu of $2,025,000 bail, according to jail records.
