Marlana Denise Murkison, a 29-year-old black woman, was shot and killed Saturday, June 2 in the 800 block of West 73rd Street in Vermont Knolls, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s records.

Shortly after 4 p.m., Murkison was in a light-colored Volkswagen Jetta when she got into an argument with her on-and-off boyfriend, Aaron Crawford, a 32-year-old black man, said Los Angeles Police Det. Chris Barling.

The man grabbed a gun and shot Murkison outside of the car, Barling said. Three children were inside the car at the time of the shooting, police said.

Murkison was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 4:40 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Crawford fled but was eventually located in New York, Barling said.

Crawford has been charged with murder and four counts of child abuse under circumstances likely to cause bodily injury or death, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. Crawford was also charged with hit-and-run causing property damage, attempted carjacking, stalking and possession of a firearm by a felon.

He has pleaded not guilty and is due back in court March 28.
