A story for every victim

Michael Antonio Ochoa, 34

Michael Antonio Ochoa, a 34-year-old Latino, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, after he was shot at Idabel Avenue and Fairhaven Street in Carson, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators.

Ochoa was walking near his home around 2:30 a.m. when he was shot, but no one reported seeing the shooting, Lt. Joe Mendoza said.

Deputies went to the intersection after someone called 911 and reported hearing gunshots.

“We think he was hanging out, just walking from one place to another area he frequents,” Mendoza said. “When the deputies arrived, he was lying on the ground, unconscious, with at least one gunshot wound to the body.”

It’s not known whether the shooter was on foot or in a vehicle, Mendoza said. “All we have is people who heard a shooting.”

Ochoa was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:59 a.m., according to Mendoza. Investigators have put a security hold on the autopsy results, Mendoza said, in the hope of weeding out false reports from credible eyewitness accounts.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
