Michael Jerome Johnson, 60

Michael Jerome Johnson, a 60-year-old black man, was shot and killed Monday, July 3, near Compton Avenue and East 98th Street in Watts, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 3:30 p.m. Johnson was standing in a parking lot at the northwest corner of East 98th Street and Compton Avenue, talking to someone about buying a car, said Los Angeles Police Det. Dave Garrido.

A light-colored sedan drove up and a person got out of the front passenger side and shot Johnson. The attacker then fled in the car.

Johnson was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:20 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

The shooting does not appear to be gang-related, police said.
