A story for every victim

Miguel Heredia, 16 [Updated]

Miguel Heredia, a 16-year-old Latino, died Thursday, April 22, five days after he was shot in the 1400 block of 59th Street in Florence-Firestone, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Heredia was at a party April 17 when he was shot at 11:35 p.m., said Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner's office. Heredia was taken to Lynwood Hospital, where he died of his injuries.

Winter said the shooting was described as gang-related.

Although the coroner’s office initially listed Heredia's death as a homicide, officials have since deferred a final determination pending additional tests that will not be available for another six to eight weeks.

[Updated Feb. 28, 2011: Coroner's officials said Heredia's death has been ruled a homicide. He died from a gunshot wound to the left buttocks.]
