A story for every victim

New on the Homicide Report: Search by age group and city of L.A.

As part of our reporting process, we're always trying to find new ways to analyze the data contained in the Homicide Report. But there are certain breakdowns we wind up using again and again. If these questions are something we're constantly running into at The Times, we figured readers would appreciate access to it as well.

So I added two new ways to filter Homicide Report data: by Los Angeles city and by age.

Although the Homicide Report had data broken down at the county level, by individual Los Angeles city neighborhood, and in L.A. County cities such as Long Beach, Inglewood and Compton, there was no way to view all incidents occurring strictly within the city of L.A. Likewise, there was no way to filter by age groups, such as victims under 6 or over 65 years old.

You can now filter by these criteria: On the Homicide Report homepage, you'll find data for the city of Los Angeles as the first choice under the neighborhoods filter menu, and you can also filter by age groups, on the right-hand side of the filters.
