A story for every victim

Paul Anthony Jauregui, 17

Paul Anthony Jauregui, a 17-year-old Latino, died Saturday, April 4, 2009, after he was shot in the 9800 block of Calmada Avenue in Whittier, according to Orange County coroner’s records.

Jauregui was at a party in the backyard of a house the night before, when he got into a fight with another partygoer, 19-year-old Ismael Raya Cardona, according to records from the California Court of Appeals.

Cardona pulled a gun and told Jauregui to turn over his money, according to court records. Jauregui then stabbed Cardona several times with a switchblade before Cardona pushed him off and began shooting.

Another partygoer was struck in the back during the gunfire but survived his injuries, documents show.

Jauregui was taken to UC Irvine Medical Center in Orange, where he was pronounced dead one minute after midnight on April 4, according to coroner’s records.

Cardona later was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and one count of attempted murder, along with allegations that he used a firearm to commit the crime, according to court records.

A jury found Cardona guilty on both counts in July 2014. He was sentenced to life at Kern Valley State Prison without the possibility of parole, according to court records.
