A story for every victim

Raquel Martinez, 19

Raquel Martinez, a 19-year-old Latina, was fatally stabbed Monday, Sept. 2, in the 6000 block of Farmdale Avenue in North Hollywood, according to L.A. County coroner’s records.

Martinez had stopped by her parents’ house to drop off formula for a niece or nephew, said LAPD Det. Thomas Townsend.

When her brother heard her voice, Townsend said, he “retrieved a knife from the kitchen and chased her and attacked her on the sidewalk.”

Their mother’s screams alerted their father, who ran outside and found Martinez on top of his sister, stabbing her, police said.

Neighbors called 911 as Martinez’s father disarmed his son and held onto the knife for police, Townsend said.

She was pronounced dead at 7:42 p.m. at the hospital, said coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter. Her autopsy is pending.

As Martinez’ brother fled, witnesses followed. He was eventually caught by police and confessed to the killing while in custody, Townsend said

Mario Alejandro Martinez, 22, was arrested on suspicion of murder in the stabbing.

The attack, police said, was the conclusion of months of hostility the man held toward his sister.

In February, he was convicted of battering his sister and was on probation for the conviction at the time of the stabbing, Townsend said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the North Hollywood Division at (818) 623-4045. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
