A story for every victim

Raymond Veloz, 48

Raymond Veloz (2009-04-20)

Raymond Veloz, a 48-year-old Latino, died Monday, April 20 as a result of complications from being shot nearly 20 years ago, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Veloz had been paraplegic since he was shot by a friend in 1989 in an incident that coroner's officials said was determined to be accidental by police. His friend was not arrested or charged in the shooting, according to Veloz's autopsy records.

Veloz had been living on his own since the accident and had been in and out of the hospital in recent months, suffering from bouts of pneumonia, coroner's officials said. He recently underwent surgery for a bowel obstruction, then caught pneumonia again at some point after the surgery and died in the hospital.

Coroner's officials said Veloz's death was ruled a homicide because the ailments that led to his death were related to injuries from his shooting.
