A story for every victim

Rene Aguilar, 54

Rene Aguilar, 54, a Latino man, died after being run down by attackers near the intersection of Vernon Avenue and Wall Street--just east of the 110 Freeway and southeast of downtown Los Angeles--on Sunday, June 17, about 4:17 a.m.

Officers were called to what they first thought was a car-versus-pedestrian accident. But after investigating, detectives concluded that the victim had been confronted by a suspect or suspects who then got in a car and ran him down. The victim was pronounced dead at California Hospital. Left, the scene. The sign did not scare off the assailants.

Update: Newton Dets. David Nunn and Rogelio Sandoval have cleared this case. A suspect, Enrique Reyes, 25, a Latino man, was arrested June 26 and charged with Aguilar's murder. Investigators called the killing a botched car-jacking. A second suspect is still at large.
