A story for every victim

Rene Luque Ortiz, 22

Rene Luque Ortiz, a 22-year-old Latino, died Thursday, Oct. 19, after he was shot in the 400 block of West Spruce Street in Compton, according to coroner’s records.

The day before he died, Ortiz was on a residential street a couple of blocks from his home about 1:40 a.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Derrick Alfred.

Investigators know little of what happened then, except that residents reported gunfire and found Ortiz lying in the front yard of a house, Alfred said.

“We don’t know if somebody pulled him into the yard or he stumbled there after he was shot,” Alfred said. “It appears he was standing on the sidewalk when someone opened fire.”

Ortiz was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead the following morning at 5:59 a.m., according to coroner's records. His cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound.

No one reported seeing the shooting, Alfred said, so investigators don’t know if Ortiz was shot by someone on foot or from a vehicle. Ortiz was not involved in gangs, Alfred said, and investigators don’t have a motive for the shooting.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
