Romel Burks, 19

Romel Burks, a 19-year-old black man, died Tuesday, July 3, two days after he was shot near 106th Street and Wilmington in Watts, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

[Editor's note: An earlier version of this post, based on information from the coroner's office, said the victim’s age was 39-years-old.]

Police received a 911 call regarding a shooting July 1 about 1:30 p.m., said LAPD Criminal Gang and Homicide Det. J. Jamison, who is handling the case.

The victim was taken by paramedics to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, where he remained until his death July 3. Coroner's records show Burks died from several gunshot wounds to his body.

Jamison said there were no details available about what led up to the shooting, but the assailant was described as a male wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.
