Roxy Borboa, 16

Roxy Borboa, identified by the coroner's office as a 16-year-old white woman, died Wednesday, March 21, after she was shot near Dakota Avenue and Gardendale Avenue in South Gate, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Borboa was riding in a car on Dakota Avenue about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday when others in the vehicle got into an altercation and shots were fired, authorities said.

A bullet went through the back window of the car and hit the girl in the back of the head as she was sitting in the back seat on the driver's side of the car, KTLA-TV station reported.

"She was an innocent victim," said sheriff's homicide Det. Karen Shonka, who is handling the investigation. "She was at the wrong place, wrong time."

Borboa was taken to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, where she was pronounced dead.

Detectives are still investigating the case.
