A story for every victim

Steven Ramirez, 25 [Updated]

Steven Ramirez, a 25-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, Nov. 7, in the 11800 block of Lakeland Avenue in Norwalk, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner's office, said Ramirez was shot about 10:30 p.m. and taken to a hospital in Norwalk, where he later died.

The shooting was possibly gang-related, Winter said.

The autopsy is still pending and the coroner's office had no other information about the case.

The Times has contacted detectives to get more information about the case and will include an update when details become available.

[Update Nov. 11: Sheriff's homicide Det. Brian Schoonmaker, who is handling the investigation, said Ramirez was walking home when he was shot.

Authorities received a call about a gunshot victim down, but when paramedics arrived they learned Ramirez had already been taken to the hospital by a friend, he said.

No arrests have been made in connection with the case, although the shooter was described as a Latino wearing a grey sweat shirt.

Schoonmaker confirmed the shooting is believed to be gang-related since Ramirez was a documented gang member.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Schoonmaker at (323) 890-5500. Tipsters who would like to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.]
