A story for every victim

Terry Alexander, 37

Terry Alexander, a 37-year-old black man, was shot and killed Thursday, April 19, near Pacific Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

A Long Beach police officer was patrolling the area near Pacific Coast Highway when he heard gunshots about 12:02 a.m. The officer drove to the scene, where he said he saw a man walking away from a body on the sidewalk on Pacific Avenue.

Authorities said the suspect, said to be a man in his 60s, fired at least two rounds at the officer, who returned fire, critically wounding the suspect, Long Beach Police Officer Lisa Massacani said.

The suspect and the man he allegedly shot were taken to the hospital. The victim, who was later identified as Terry Alexander, was pronounced dead several hours later. Coroner's records show Alexander suffered several gunshot wounds to his body.

Massacani said the motive for the shooting is unknown and that an investigation is underway.

The identity of the suspect has not been released.

In addition to the Long Beach Police Department's investigation, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office will conduct an independent probe of the officer-involved shooting incident, officials said.
