A story for every victim

Edgar Velazquez, 36 [Updated]

Edgar Velazquez, a 36-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Monday, Jan. 10, in the 7000 block of South Normandie Avenue in Vermont Knolls, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

[For the record: An earlier version of this post, which was based on the original report, identified Velazquez as an unknown 25-year old.]

Velazquez was the victim of a walk-up shooting, said Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office.

After neighbors heard gunshots, officials said, they called police, who arrived and found the victim on the ground and unresponsive. Coroner's records show he was shot several times and was pronounced dead at the scene at 5 a.m.

The Times has contacted investigators to get more information about the case and will post an update as soon as details become available.

[Updated at 11:04 a.m., Jan. 18: There were no witnesses to the shooting, and investigators do not have a description of the assailant, said LAPD criminal gang and homicide Det. Lyman Doster, who is handling the case.

Doster noted that Velazquez was a documented 18th Street gang member.

Despite the lack of information, investigators are continuing to follow up on several leads, he said.

Anyone with information about the incident or the identity of the shooter is asked to contact Doster at (213) 485-1383. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (800-222-8477).]
