A story for every victim

Vicente Chavez, 46

Vicente Chavez, a 46-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Thursday, July 15, in the 3700 block of Mettler Street in Historic South-Central, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Chavez was in his home about 9:15 p.m. when he heard someone outside yelling at his daughter, said LAPD Newton Det. Richard Arciniega, who is handling the investigation.

Chavez walked to the front yard and saw a man on a bike and told him to leave, Arciniega said. The man allegedly yelled back gang language at Chavez, and then shot him, according to Arciniega.

Authorities were called and Chavez was pronounced dead at the scene. His daughter suffered a bullet graze wound to the chest. Arciniega declined to provide more information about the daughter.

Four hours after the shooting, police arrested Julio Flores, a 20-year-old Latino, in connection with Chavez's death and booked him on suspicion of murder.

Flores, who police describe as a known gang member, appeared in court July 20 and is being held in lieu of $1-million bail.

Anyone with additional information about the incident is asked to contact Arciniega at (323) 846-5363. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call CrimeStoppers by dialing (800) 222-TIPS (8477).
