A story for every victim

William James Knight, 33

William Knight, a 33-year-old white man, was fatally shot Monday, July 5, in the 1600 block of West 219th Street in Harbor Gateway, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

[For the record: An earlier version of this post, based on the initial coroner's information, incorrectly gave Knight's race as Latino.]

Knight was standing in front of an apartment complex about 10:20 p.m. when an assailant walked up and shot him several times, said LAPD Harbor Det. David Alvarez, who is handling the investigation.

People in the area later discovered Knight wounded and called paramedics. He was taken to Harbor UCLA Medical Center where he died.

Investigators currently have no description of the possible shooter. Since it was the day after the Fourth of July, residents in the area thought the gunshots were fireworks and did not come out to see what had happened, Alvarez said.

Anyone with information about Knight's death is asked to contact Det. Alvarez at (310) 726-7881. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call Crimestoppers at (800) 222-TIPS (800) 222-8477.
