Willie Singleton, a 43-year-old black man, was fatally wounded Sunday, Aug. 4, in the 10900 block of South Wilmington Avenue in Watts, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Singleton was walking south on Wilmington around 5:30 p.m. when a gunman shot him from behind, Los Angeles police Det. Supervisor Sal LaBarbera said.

The gunman, described as a black male, then ran west and hopped into a dark vehicle, LaBarbera said.

Singleton was taken to a hospital, where he died at 6:13 p.m., coroner's spokesman Ed Winter said.
