A story for every victim

Yong Hoon Yoo, 28

Yong Hoon “Kevin”  Yoo, a 29-year-old Asian man, was fatally shot Tuesday, June 7, in the 600 block of South Berendo Street in Koreatown, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m., officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's Olympic Division found Yoo with gunshot wounds. Yoo was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:26 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Investigators believe that Yoo suddenly attacked a woman and stabbed her in the parking garage of an apartment complex, said LAPD Det. Scott Masterson. The woman’s boyfriend, who was inside a nearby car, jumped out and shot Yoo, Masterson said.

The shooter was questioned and released. Police are still investigating and are so far unsure  why Yoo stabbed the woman, Masterson said.

“The shooter nor the victim knew the suspect,” he said.

According to a news release from the LAPD, Yoo is a known gang member and has an “extensive” criminal record. Yoo was out on bail with a court case pending in L.A.
