A story for every victim

Yoshimi Shanmei Cheng, 73

Yoshimi Shanmei Cheng, a 73-year-old Asian woman, was shot and killed on Saturday, June 24, in the 1300 block of South Stevens Avenue in San Gabriel, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Cheng was in the apartment she shared with her son, Raymond Cheng, 49, and his wife about 10 p.m. when she was shot by her son, who then shot himself, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.

“We are treating this as a murder-suicide,” Mendoza said.

The two were together in a common area of the apartment when the shooting occurred. “All I know is the mother was upset at him because he was unemployed, and that led to the shooting,” Mendoza said.

Both Yoshimi Cheng and her son were pronounced dead at the scene at 10:24 p.m., according to coroner’s records.  No one else was injured.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.
