Hugo Romero, a 26-year-old Latino, died Sunday, May 29, after he was shot in the 22000 block of Joliet Avenue in Hawaiian Gardens, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Romero, who lived in Bellflower, was visiting friends in his former neighborhood around midnight, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Eddie Hernandez. As the friends stood in the street talking, a dark-colored sedan drove up and someone inside began firing, Hernandez said.
Romero was hit by the gunfire and was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:23 a.m. with multiple gunshot wounds, according to coroner’s records. No one else was injured, Hernandez said.

Jose Enrique Lopez, a 30-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Tuesday, May 24, in the 4600 block of East Rosecrans Avenue in East Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Shortly before 2:30 p.m., Lopez was walking alone along East Rosecrans Avenue when he was shot, said Lt. John Corina with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Lopez was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:20 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
Witnessed later told authorities that they heard gunshots and saw Lopez run across the street and collapse on the sidewalk.
Detectives are still working on a description of the gunman and are unsure about the motive, Corina said.
Lopez’s family has set up a fundraising page to help with burial expenses.

Martin “Tito” Arias, a 26-year-old Latino, died Monday, May 23, after he was shot near East Rosecrans and North Bradfield avenues in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 8:45 p.m. on May 22, Arias, of San Bernardino, was at a small family gathering when a man was spotted breaking into a Toyota sedan, said Lt. Jose Mendoza with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Arias went outside to confront the man, who ran north on Bradfield Avenue and across lanes of traffic onto East Rosecrans Avenue, Mendoza said.
The man reached the sidewalk, turned around and fired one round at Arias, striking him in the lower torso, Mendoza said.
Arias was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:29 the next morning, according to coroner’s records.

Margarita Valdez Castro, a 68-year-old Latina, was fatally shot on Sunday, May 22, in the 1100 block of Locust Avenue in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
About 12:50 p.m., Long Beach police were called to assist fire officials at a residence where someone had died, according to a police news release. Officers found a woman, later identified as Castro, with a stab wound to the chest, said police spokeswoman Marlene Arrona.
She was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:56 p.m., according to coroner's records.
Detectives arrested Luis Antonio Jimenezmolina, 32, on suspicion of murder, Arrona said. The motive for the stabbing was unknown, police said.
Julio Cesar Pena, a 34-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Sunday, May 22, in the 400 block of Gulf Avenue in Wilmington, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
About 11:30 p.m., police responded to a shooting call and found Pena on the ground, said Los Angeles Police Officer George Romulo.
Pena was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:42 p.m., according to coroner's records.
Investigators determined that Pena was riding his motorcycle home and about to turn in the intersection of Gulf Avenue and West D Street, when he was approached by a person who stepped off the sidewalk and shot him several times.
Pena lost control of his motorcycle and was found in the street, Romulo said.

Nayeli Guerrero-Cruz, a 26-year-old Latina, was fatally shot Friday, May 20 in the 100 block of East 47th Street in South Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 8:15 p.m., Guerrero-Cruz got into an argument with her boyfriend, said Los Angeles Police Det. Rich Arciniega.
The man pulled out a handgun and shot Guerrero-Cruz, then called police, Arciniega said.
When police arrived, Ulises Espinoza, a 43-year-old Latino, was inside the home. Espinoza was arrested on suspicion of murder, police said.
Guerrero-Cruz was pronounced dead in her bedroom at 8:26 p.m., according to coroner's records.
Espinoza was charged with one count of murder with an allegation that he fired a gun, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Samuel Cuevas, a 46-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Sunday, May 15, in the 8000 block of Langdon Avenue in Van Nuys, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Shortly after 4 a.m., officers from the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon and found Cuevas wounded on the front porch of a home, according to a news release from the department.
Police determined that Cuevas was walking east on Chase Street and passed a group drinking in front of an apartment complex. The group “exchanged words” with Cuevas, then chased him, police said.
Eventually, the assailants caught up with Cuevas, and he was shot. The attackers, described as Latinos in their early 20s, ran west on Chase Street. A Latina was also presumed to be with the group, who was last seen getting into a black Lincoln Town Car.
Richard Arthur Tafoya, a 30-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, May 15, in the 11800 block of Ashworth Street in Artesia, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Tafoya was walking about a block from his home around 7:38 p.m. when he was shot, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina. Deputies found Tafoya lying in the driveway of a home.
Paramedics took Tafoya to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:37 p.m., with a gunshot wound to the head, according to coroner’s records.
Investigators have no information about the shooter or a motive, Corina said.
“We have no witnesses who saw the shooting,” he said. “We just got reports that gunshots were heard, and then a report about a gunshot victim."

Jose Raul Zeron, a 37-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Saturday, May 14, in the 15500 block of Nordhoff Street in North Hills, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 4 a.m., Zeron and another person were walking home from a store when a dark-colored four-door vehicle approached, according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department. The vehicle slowed to a stop and the driver fired two shots at Zeron and the other person; then the car drove east on Nordhoff Street.
Shortly after, LAPD officers responded to a call of shots fired and found Zeron on the sidewalk.
Zeron was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:55 a.m., according to coroner’s records.
The driver was described as male and as wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt, police said.

Hector Hugo Velasquez, a 44-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Friday, May 13, in the 8200 block of Ackley Street in Paramount, according to coroner’s records.
Velasquez was standing on the south side of the street, near the curb, in the residential area about 12:10 p.m. when a black vehicle drove by, said Los Angeles County Det. Dean Camarillo.
The car stopped and someone inside shot at Velasquez multiple times, Camarillo said. The car then continued east on Ackley Street toward Downey Avenue.
A friend drove Velasquez to Kaiser Permanente Bellflower Hospital, Camarillo said. The hospital does not have a trauma center, Camarillo said, so paramedics then took Velasquez to Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
Velasquez was pronounced dead at the Long Beach hospital 1:17 p.m. with gunshots to the chest, according to coroner's records.
