Alfredo Antonio Carrera, a 24-year-old Latino, was fatally shot on Wednesday, Aug. 14,  in the 1100 block of East 68th Street in the Florence-Firestone area of South Los Angeles, according to records from the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner.

Carrera, a first-time father-to-be, was standing in his driveway about 7 p.m. talking to his childhood friend, Jose Antonio Flores Velazquez, 24, a doctoral student in astrophysics at UC Irvine, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Derrick Alfred.  

Flores Velazquez had come back to his old neighborhood to drop off a gift for a baby shower scheduled for that coming Saturday, to honor the first child of Carrera and his girlfriend, Marilyn Cuevas, The Times reported. Flores Velazquez couldn't attend the shower, but he wanted to make sure Carrera got his gift— a physics book for children.

Raylorce Ysef Gordon Jr, a 30-year-old black male, died Wednesday, Aug. 14, after being shot in Florence, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Marlena Virginia Alvirez, a 13-year-old Latina, was fatally shot Tuesday, Aug. 13, in the 1700 block of West Avenue J-15 in Lancaster, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner records. 

Marlena was at home in the bedroom she shared with her brother and two sisters when she was shot around 5:30 p.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Richard Biddle. 

Deputies were initially called to the home about someone being shot by a BB gun, Biddle said, "but almost simultaneously the hospital called to report that a juvenile was in the emergency room with a gunshot wound."

Investigators went to both locations and discovered the calls were related, he said. A family member drove Marlena to the hospital, but she was pronounced dead at 5:46 p.m., according to coroner's records.

Martin Carlos Jr., a 35-year-old Latino, was pronounced dead on Monday, Aug. 12, after he was shot on the Los Angeles River West Bike Route, north of the Imperial Highway, in South Gate, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner records. 

Firefighters were called to the scene around 4:40 p.m. regarding a body on the bike path between Imperial Highway and Firestone Boulevard, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Richard Biddle said. 

Carlos' body was found on the path just north of Imperial Highway, Biddle said. 

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:25 p.m., according to coroner's records. The cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound to the head. 

Biddle said it appeared Carlos lived in a tent along the riverbed and had probably been shot several hours before he was found.

Tasi Malaki, a 45-year-old man of Samoan descent, died Sunday, Aug. 11 after he was shot in the 400 block of West Willow Street in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County  Medical Examiner-Coroner's records. 

Malaki, a Long Beach-based reggae and hip-hop artist known as Toko Tasi, was shot following a dispute near West Willow Street and Eucalyptus Avenue, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:13 a.m., according to coroner's records. The cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds. 

Friends told  KTLA5 that Malaki was attending a high school reunion when he was shot.

“We heard the gunshots,” Audra Viscidi told KTLA during a vigil for Malaki the following evening. “Before that, we were all just inside laughing and hugging each other, and saying ‘I love you’ and catching up.”

Anthony Micheal Tafoya Ortiz, a 24-year-old Latino male, died Sunday, Aug. 11, after being shot in Pasadena, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Javier Munoz, a 35-year-old Latino male, died Saturday, Aug. 10, after being shot near 1439 E. 25th St. in Central-Alameda, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

James Earl Alexander, a 34-year-old male, died Friday, Aug. 9, after being shot in Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Ramon Cortez, a 35-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Thursday, Aug. 8, in the 8700 block of Aqueduct Avenue in North Hills, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 6:30 a.m., Cortez was walking west on Parthenia Street toward Aqueduct Avenue when a car pulled up and a man wearing dark clothing exited and began shooting at him, said Los Angeles police Det. James Fillmore.

Cortez was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:57 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

The car fled north on Aqueduct Avenue from Parthenia, police said. 

Cortez, an expecting father, was on his way to work at a moving company, Fillmore said.

Detectives are looking for witnesses.
