Gabriel Shea Carlos, 16

Gabriel Shea Carlos, a 16-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Friday, June 2, in the 400 block of Shrode Avenue outside Duarte in the San Gabriel Valley, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Deputies were called to the residential area in Mayflower Village around 1:30 a.m. after gunshots were heard. When they arrived, they saw the teen lying in a driveway two houses away from the home of his grandmother and father, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.

The teen, who went by his middle name, lived in Arcadia but often visited family on Shrode Avenue, Mendoza said. His family didn’t realize he was in the neighborhood that evening, though, the lieutenant said.

Shea was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:40 a.m., according to coroner’s records. He had at least one gunshot wound in his torso, Mendoza said.

Armando Reyes, 29

Armando Reyes, a 29-year-old Latino, died Sunday, June 4, after being shot in the 5500 block of Laurel Avenue in Palmdale, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Reyes was a passenger in a car driven by his girlfriend, and the two were traveling west on Laurel Avenue around 5:50 p.m., Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza said.

The couple stopped when they saw another car parked along the curb with at least two Latinos inside, Mendoza said. Reyes got out of the car to talk to the others, and an argument ensued.

One of the people in the car pulled a gun and shot Reyes, Mendoza said, striking him at least once in the torso.

The people in the car with the shooter drove away, heading west on Laurel and then north on Julian Lane, Mendoza said. Reyes managed to get back in the car with his girlfriend, who followed …

Andre Devon Anderson, 37

Andre Devon Anderson, a 37-year-old black man, was fatally shot Sunday, June 4, in the 1100 block of Cambridge Court in Lancaster, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Anderson, who lived in another part of Lancaster, was standing in the residential street with his brother and a group of friends at 7:11 p.m. when a man walked up to the small group, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza said.

The man seemed focused on Anderson and his 39-year-old brother, who was visiting from Victorville, Mendoza said. After a brief argument with the brothers, the man pulled a gun and began shooting.

Anderson was struck in the torso at least once, and his brother was shot in the arm, Mendoza said.

The brothers were taken to a nearby hospital, where Anderson was pronounced dead at 7:49 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Johntee Antonio Ettress, a 29-year-old black male, died Sunday, June 4, after being shot in Willowbrook, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Xiuxia Chen, 44

Xiuxia “Michelle” Chen, a 44-year-old Chinese woman, was shot and killed on Friday, July 2, in the 2700 block of Valley Boulevard in Alhambra, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Chen, a mother of two, was the manager of the Ambassador Inn hotel at 2720 Valley Blvd., where she worked from 3:30 to 11:30 p.m., said her husband, Armando Escandor.

A man came into the hotel office about 11 p.m. and tried to rob her, shooting her at least once in the torso, according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department news release.

A co-worker found Chen on the ground bleeding and called 911. Chen was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:34 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Chen had worked at the hotel for six years and been the manager for two, Escandor said. He’d tried to convince Chen to work an earlier shift, but his wife was …

Duane Travon O'Steen, 30

Duane Travon O'Steen, a 40-year-old black man, was shot and killed Friday, June 2 in the 200 block of West 89th Street in Broadway-Manchester, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

About 9:45 p.m., O'Steen was standing in front of a home with other people who were gathered to celebrate a birthday, said Los Angeles Police Det. Dave Garrido.

A sedan traveling eastbound on West 89th Street drove by the home, and a person inside began firing at the group, Garrido said.

O'Steen along with three others -- two women and a man -- were wounded. O'Steen was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:56 p.m., according to coroner's records.

The other three victims were treated for their injuries and are expected to survive.

Detectives believe the shooting may be related to an ongoing gang fued in the area, Garrido said.

Richard Daniel Aukschun, 44

Richard Daniel Aukschun, a 44-year-old Armenian man, was shot and killed Friday, June 2, in the 15700 block of Saticoy Street in Van Nuys, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 3 p.m., Aukschun confronted a 26-year-old man who was spray-painting graffiti on the side of an automotive repair shop, Los Angeles Police Det. Gabe Bucknell said. The two argued, and the 26-year-old walked away.

The man came back about five minutes later with a gun and chased Aukschun around the body shop, Bucknell said. The gunman cornered Aukschun in a storage closet and shot him point-blank, Bucknell said.

Officers found Aukschun on the ground inside the shop, bleeding from the upper torso, police said. He was pronounced dead at 3:31 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

The gunman ran away on Haskell Avenue, police said.

Police identified the shooter as Abraham Soltero, a Latino, and a documented gang member …

Palmdale couple convicted of murdering toddler

A Palmdale woman and her boyfriend were found guilty May 26 in the killing of her toddler son three years ago, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Brandon Jerel Williams, 27, was found guilty of first-degree murder, and Rosie Lee Wilson, 23, was convicted of second-degree murder in the death of Anthony Lee Wilson, 2. Jurors also found Williams guilty of one count each of torture and assault on a child causing death. Wilson was convicted of one count of child abuse.

From June to August in 2014, prosecutors said, Williams struck the child multiple times in the head. Wilson did not seek medical care for her son after the beatings, authorities said.

On Aug. 21, 2014, Wilson and Williams took Anthony to the hospital after he became unresponsive. Coroner’s reports revealed that the boy had broken bones in both arms, broken ribs and other severe injuries. …

Two convicted in 2012 murder of Hawthorne man

A man and woman have been convicted of burglary, conspiracy and murder in the beating death of a Hawthorne man in late 2012.

John Woods, a 50-year-old black man, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, after he was beaten in the 3600 block of 126th Street in Hawthorne, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Woods was sleeping on the couch of a friend’s apartment on Sunday, Dec. 23, when a man and woman came in around 1 a.m., Hawthorne Police Det. The Vu said.

The woman, Debra Lynn Miles, 51, knew Woods, who sold methamphetamine, Vu said. Investigators think Miles brought the man, Marques Montrail Borney, to help her rob Woods of his money and drugs.

Borney hit Woods in the head multiple times with his fists and a bottle before the couple left, Vu said.

Woods was taken to a hospital with a skull fracture and bleeding in his …

2 women were killed and dumped by L.A. freeways. Six years later, there's a break in the case

A man suspected of raping and killing two women in Lincoln Heights and dumping their bodies by area freeways six years ago has been arrested, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Geovanni Borjas, 32, was arrested on suspicion of murder on Thursday by the LAPD’s Robbery Homicide Division and tactical Metropolitan Division officers. Borjas has been charged with two counts of murder, two counts of rape and one count of kidnapping. At his arraignment May 30, he pleaded not guilty and was ordered held without bail.

Borjas, of Torrance, stands accused of killing 17-year-old Michelle Lozano and 22-year-old Bree’Anna Guzman.

At a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Police Chief Charlie Beck said investigators used familial DNA to track down Borjas.

A crime scene DNA search in a statewide database showed that Borjas’ father — who had been arrested previously on suspicion of domestic violence assault — was a close relative …

Pomona man gets 55 to life for stabbing man to death

A Pomona man was sentenced May 25 to 55 years to life in state prison for stabbing an acquaintance to death in a trailer nearly two years ago, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

On March 15, a jury found George Hernandez, 48, guilty of second-degree murder for killing Albert Daniel Herrera, 36. The special allegation that Hernandez use a knife to commit the crime was found to be true.

Herrera went to visit Hernandez's roommates at a Pomona trailer on June 24, 2015, prosecutors said.

When Hernandez arrived at the trailer, he stabbed Herrera 40 times before fleeing to an ex-girlfriend’s home, according to prosecutors. Herrera died at the scene.

The ex-girlfriend contacted Pomona police about Hernandez’s whereabouts and he was arrested early the next morning, prosecutors added.

When Hernandez was taken into custody, police discovered Herrera’s blood on his clothing, according to evidence presented at trial. …

Man charged with shooting another man in front of a child

A man who authorities say fatally shot another man in front of a 6-year-old boy in Long Beach was charged with murder May 22, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Prosecutors say Jason Monroe Daniels fatally shot William Luther Hayes, 38, on April 19. Daniels, 33, has been charged with three felony counts — murder, child abuse and possession of a firearm by a felon. The charges include a special allegation that Daniels used a firearm to commit the crime.

On April 19, Daniels visited an ex-girlfriend’s family home in Long Beach, prosecutors said. Daniels became agitated when he saw Hayes outside spending time with the ex-girlfriend’s son, prosecutors said.

Daniels exited the house, approached Hayes and shot him in front of the boy, according to prosecutors. Daniels then fled the scene, prosecutors said.

Long Beach police responded to the scene. Hayes was taken to a local hospital where he …

Compton man charged in fatal shooting at Long Beach motel

A Compton man was charged May 26 in the shooting death of a woman in late April at a Long Beach motel, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Terry Moore, 29, was charged with murder in the death of Lanette Washington, 29. He also faces two counts of pandering. Long Beach police said at the time of his arrest, Moore had an outstanding warrant for violating his post-release conditions for domestic violence in 2015.

On April 21, Long Beach police found Washington in a motel room after she had been shot multiple times. She was transported to a hospital, where she died. A police spokesman said Washington and Moore knew each other and had argued prior to the killing.

Moore is scheduled to return to court June 8.

Second attacker sentenced to prison in beating death of homeless man

More than two years after the fatal assault of a homeless man in downtown Los Angeles and nine months after his accomplice pleaded no contest in the transient's beating death, a second man has been sentenced in the attack.

Charles Allender, 43, was convicted of second-degree murder in the 2015 killing of Derrick Hamilton, 45. On May 19, he was sentenced to 35 years to life in state prison. Allender has previous convictions for receiving stolen property in 1995, robbery in 1996 and resisting an executive officer in 2005.

Allender’s accomplice, Derek Miller, 31, pleaded no contest on Aug. 22, 2016, to a felony count of voluntary manslaughter in the attack. Two months later, he was sentenced to 11 years in state prison.

Prosecutors said that on Feb. 7, 2015, Allender and Miller, both of whom also were transients, attacked Hamilton in the parking lot of a Burger King in downtown Los Angeles.

Lazale Dewian Smith, 27

Lazale Smith, a 27-year-old black man, was shot and killed Wednesday, May 31, in the 100 block of West 104th Street in Broadway-Manchester, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 12:45 p.m., patrol officers from the Los Angeles Police Department responding to a call regarding an assault with a deadly weapon found Smith unconscious in the street, Los Angeles Police Det. Dave Garrido said.

Investigators think Smith had pulled up to the area in a dark-colored SUV, got out and fired multiple rounds down a long driveway.

Another person returned fire, striking Smith, who collapsed in the street.

The SUV in which Smith had arrived then fled, police said, and no additional victims were found.

Detectives are working to identify the other shooter.
