Mo'Nayjah Jackson, a 1-year-old black girl, was suffocated Friday, May 20, in the 100 block of West Del Mar Avenue in Pasadena, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

[Editor's note: This death was first reported by the coroner in May, but a determination that the cause was homicide was not made until later. The Times added it to the Homicide Report after that confirmation.]

Police and paramedics responded to a call of a child not breathing, said Pasadena Police Department Lt. Tracey Ibarra. Efforts to resuscitate the child failed.

"The family said they didn't know what happened. It was considered a suspicious death, and an investigation was initiated," Ibarra said.

On Aug. 25, the child’s father, Marquise Jackson, was arrested on suspicion of murder.

Upon questioning, Jackson, a 21-year-old black man, "admitted he suffocated the 1-year-old girl," Ibarra said.

Laura Hunt, a 32-year-old Latina, was fatally shot Sunday, Dec. 11, in the 13200 block of Clarkdale Avenue in Norwalk, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Hunt was pronounced dead at the scene about 12:40 p.m. Officials said a male suspect was taken into custody in connection with the killing.

According to coroner's records, Hunt was shot in the head with a rifle gun by her boyfriend.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department homicide detectives are investigating the shooting.

Heidi McCoi, a 23-year-old black woman, was shot and killed Sunday, Dec. 11, in the 11100 block of South Main Street in Broadway-Manchester, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

The shooting occurred about 1 a.m. at 111th and Main streets outside a home where a party was being held, Los Angeles Police Department officials said. McCoi died at the scene.

A man also was shot in the buttocks and the arm and was taken to a hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

Police had no description of the suspect or suspects and said the wounded man was not talking to investigators.

Alfonso Covarrubias, a 17-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, Dec. 11, near Gladstone Avenue and Terra Bella Street in Lake View Terrace, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Covarrubias was tagging on Terra Bella Street about 2:35 a.m. when unknown suspects drove by and shot him, said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Bruce Borihanh.

The victim died at the scene.

Borihanh said investigators believe the shooting may have been gang-related, but police have no description of a suspect or vehicle.

Alexander Gonzalez, a 36-year-old Latino, was stabbed to death Saturday, Dec. 10, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

According to coroner's officials, the victim was dropped off with stab wounds at a bar in the 10000 block of Mills Avenue in Whittier. Authorities responded to a 911 call about 9 p.m. He was rushed to St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, where he was pronounced dead at 10:38 p.m.

Investigators are still trying to determine everything that happened, said sheriff’s homicide Sgt. B. Cotter, and no arrest has been made.Officials did not provide any additional information about the case.

Robert Hendrix, a 38-year-old white man, was shot and killed Saturday, Dec. 10, in the 11900 block of West Trail Road in Lopez/Kagel Canyon, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

A neighbor heard gunshots inside the victim’s home and called 911 about 3:15 a.m. Hendrix was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:40 a.m.

According to coroner’s records, Hendrix died from multiple gunshot wounds.

“It appears to have been a home-invasion robbery,” said Los Angeles County sheriff’s homicide Det. T. Anderson.

Investigators are still seeking information and pursuing leads, Anderson said, and no arrests have been made.

George Cleggett Jr., a 26-year-old black man, was strangled Friday, Dec. 9, at the Men's Central Jail in the 400 block of Bauchet Street in Chinatown, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Cleggett was found at 12:58 p.m. on the floor of a two-man cell by sheriff's deputies conducting hourly security checks. The victim was not breathing, and medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene, according to officials from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Lt. Mary Leef said the investigation into any potential motive or suspect is continuing.

The inmate, who was being held on a murder charge, was alone when he was discovered, authorities said.

Tyler Brehm, a 26-year-old white man, was shot and killed by police Friday, Dec. 9, near Sunset Boulevard and Vine Street in Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Los Angeles Police Department sources said that at about 10:20 a.m., Brehm began firing a .40-caliber handgun in the air and menacing motorists in a McDonald's parking lot before walking toward the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Vine Street. Just south of Sunset, he fired several shots at a silver Mercedes-Benz coupe. The driver, music industry executive John Atterberry, was struck by three bullets in the neck and face.

Russell Bounds, a 49-year-old black man, was found dead Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Carlin Avenue and Thorson Avenue in Lynwood, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

[Note: Although sheriff’s homicide officials identified the victim as black, the coroner’s office listed Bounds as white.]

“Residents called the city about a foul odor, and city workers discovered the remains,” said sheriff’s homicide Det. B. House, who is handling the investigation. Police were called and arrived about 3 p.m.

According to coroner’s records, Bounds died from blunt head trauma. The body was decomposed when discovered and later identified by his fingerprints, coroner's officials said.

The homicide does not appear to be gang-related, and investigators are pursuing several leads, House said. No arrests have been made.

Officials did not release any additional information about Bounds' death.

“Anything is possible at this point,” House said.

Rachel Marie Bruner, a 27-year-old white female, died Monday, Dec. 12, after being shot in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Roel Torres, a 19-year-old white male, died Sunday, Dec. 11, after being shot in Mount Washington, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Asako Kamota Akasaka, a 79-year-old Asian female, died Saturday, Dec. 10, in Sawtelle, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Deshawn Zoloranzo, a 2-year-old toddler, died Saturday, Oct. 29, after sustaining trauma in the 38200 block of 5th Street East in Palmdale, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

The child’s mother, Jennifer Zoloranzo, and her boyfriend, Joe Hickman, took the boy to the hospital for treatment of head injuries that she said occurred when the child slipped in the bathtub.

Deshawn was pronounced dead on arrival.

Zoloranzo and Hickman were then arrested on suspicion of murder.

According to a statement from the L.A. County Sheriff's Department, the child had several bruises and burns that were inconsistent with Zoloranzo's story.

When questioned by investigators, Zoloranzo, 19, and Hickman, 21, allegedly admitted to beating the child, sheriff's officials said.

Humberto Rodriguez, a 30-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Sunday, Dec. 4, in the 3500 block of East 54th Street in Central-Alameda, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Officials responded to multiple 911 calls reporting a shooting shortly after 6:00 p.m. The victim was taken to St. Francis Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:46 p.m.

Rodriguez, who was from Maywood, died from multiple gunshot wounds, according to L.A. County coroner’s office spokesman Ed Winter.

Investigators are pursuing leads in the case, said Sgt. J. Cochran, but no arrests have been made. There appeared to be no evidence of a fight—the victim was walking down the street, nearing his house, when he was confronted by two Latinos. Both are believed to be the shooters, said Cochran. Detectives have not confirmed that the shooting was gang-related.

Duc Vinh Dam, a 32-year-old Asian man, was fatally stabbed Sunday, Dec. 4, in the 400 block of Gina Drive in Carson, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

[Editor's note: An earlier version of this post, based on information from the coroner's office, listed the victim as an unidentified male.]

The victim had a confrontation with his brother-in-law and sustained more than 100 stab wounds, said Ed Winter of the coroner’s office.

Officials responded to a 911 call in the afternoon after the victim was discovered by his sister-in-law. English-speaking barriers delayed the 911 call, officials said. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:46 p.m.

Investigators have named Peter Alvarez Tapia, a 36-year-old Latino, as a suspect, said Sgt. M. Lillienfeld, but it appears that Tapia has fled to Mexico. There is no warrant yet for his arrest.
