Joe Anthony Ruiz, a 32-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Thursday, Aug. 29, in the 8110 block of South Broadway in Florence, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s records.
About 1 a.m., Ruiz was working as a clerk in an unauthorized marijuana shop when two people came into the shop and shot him, said Los Angeles Police Det. David Dilkes.
The two suspects fled on foot south on Broadway, Dilkes said.
Ruiz was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:20 a.m., according to coroner's records.
Police identified the suspects as Iaushee Smith, 24, and Tyre Lavell Sherman, 23, both black men.
Smith has been charged with one count of murder with a gang allegation and an allegation that he committed a murder during an attempted robbery, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
Smith also faces an allegation that he used a handgun as a deadly weapon. …
Traveon Ashanti Winkler, a 30-year-old black man, was shot and killed Thursday, Aug. 29, near West 74th and South Flower streets in Vermont Knolls, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Shortly before 11:30 a.m., officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's 77th Division responded to a call of a shooting and found Winkler on the west sidewalk suffering from a gunshot wound, said LAPD Det. David Dilkes.
Winkler was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:34 a.m., according to coroner’s records.
Detectives determined that Winkler got into an altercation with another person moments before the shooting. The other person pulled out a gun and shot Winkler, then took off running.
Police are looking for witnesses.

Two gang members were sentenced this week for the 2016 murder of a 19-year-old Marine on leave from Camp Pendleton who was visiting family and friends in Jefferson Park, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
Oscar Aguilar, 28, was sentenced to 100 years to life in state prison for shooting Carlos Segovia-Lopez in the head while he was sitting in his car in South Los Angeles, prosecutors said. Esau Rios, 31, who told Aguilar to shoot Segovia-Lopez, was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison.
In June, Aguilar and Rios were each found guilty of murder and shooting at an occupied motor vehicle. A jury also found Aguilar guilty of being a felon in possession of a firearm and determined that the shooting was committed for the benefit of a street gang.

Dwayne Fields, a 62-year-old black man, died Tuesday, Aug. 27, after he was set on fire near East 6th and San Pedro streets in downtown L.A., according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
On Aug. 26 about 11:30 p.m., Fields was inside his tent when another man set his living quarters ablaze.
Responding officers found Fields walking down East 6th Street, his body still burning, according to two law enforcement officials who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the case candidly.
The officers tried to extinguish the flames, but Fields was badly burned. Fields was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:20 a.m. the next day.
Jonathan Early, a 38 year-old black man, was charged with capital murder in connection with Fields’ death.

Michael Sharrell Stephens Jr., a 30-year-old black male, died Monday, Aug. 26, after sustaining blunt force trauma in Florence, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.
Charles Edward Mondev, a 19-year-old white man, was shot and killed Sunday, Aug. 25, in the 900 block of Lincoln Boulevard in Santa Monica, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 6:25 p.m., officers from the Santa Monica Police Department responded to an apartment after a report of a shooting, according to a news release from the department.
Police said that Mondev got into an argument with his brother, Christopher Michael Mondev, who pulled out a gun and shot Charles inside their home.
Charles Mondev was pronounced dead at 6:39 p.m. at the scene, coroner’s records show. His brother was taken into police custody at the scene.
Christopher Mondev has been charged with one count of murder with the allegation that he used a handgun to inflict bodily injury, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office. He is due back in court Sept. 25.

Johnny Lee Akins, a 49-year-old black male, died Friday, Aug. 23, in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.
DeeNisha Artimes-Sarah Adams, a 22-year-old black woman, was fatally stabbed Thursday, Aug. 22, in the 500 block of West 104th Place in Vermont Vista, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 1:30 a.m., Adams was picked up by a person near West 104th and South Figueroa streets, said Los Angeles Police Det. Nathan Kouri.
While inside the car, Adams and the other person got into an argument that escalated and Adams was cut with a “sharp instrument,” Kouri said. Police declined to say what type of sharp instrument was used.
Adams got out of the vehicle and was found on the sidewalk by a pedestrian, who called police.
Adams was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 4:15 a.m., according to coroner's records.
The other person inside the vehicle was identified as Isaac Jacob Germany, a 30-year-old black man, police said.

Edgar Franquez, a 36-year-old Latino, died Thursday, Aug. 22, after he was shot in the 5000 block of Fayette Street in Highland Park, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s records.
About 9:18 p.m. on Aug. 21, Franquez was in his backyard when he was approached by a person who shot him, said Los Angeles Police Det. Ryan Watterson. Officers responded to a shooting call at the home.
Franquez was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:53 a.m. Aug. 22, according to coroner’s records.
Police are trying to determine if the assailant fled on foot or in a vehicle. At this point, police have not released a motive.
