Derek Schaefer, a 17-year-old white teenager, was shot and killed Monday, Jan. 1, in the 1500 block of West 205th Street in Harbor-Gateway, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 12:35 a.m., Schaefer and a 16-year-old friend had just left a nearby Wal-Mart and had accidentally set off a vehicle’s alarm when they started running east on West 205th Street, said Los Angeles Police Det. Dawna Killingsworth.

The two boys spotted a dark SUV that rolled by slowly, and a person got out of the passenger side and began shooting at the teens, Killingsworth said.

Schaefer was struck in the torso, and the 16-year-old was struck in the buttocks.

The vehicle continued west on West 205th Street, police said. A party was going on nearby, and attendees called police.

Schaefer was pronounced dead at 1:05 a.m. at the scene.

Neither Schaefer nor the 16-year-old had a criminal record or …

John Hautz, an 88-year-old white man, died Monday, Jan. 1, after sustaining traumatic injuries in the 2300 block of 34th Street in Santa Monica, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

A neighbor called Santa Monica Police about 1 p.m. and said Hautz appeared to be unconscious in his home. Officers found Hautz with multiple injuries as well as a rope around his body, according to a police department news release. 

Hautz was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:15 p.m., according to coroner’s records. Inside the house, police discovered an opened bedroom window with the screen removed.

Jason Darnell Brown, a 41-year-old black man, was stabbed to death Monday, Jan. 1, in the 800 block of East 87th Place in the Green Meadows area of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 7:30 p.m., Los Angeles Police responded to a home and found Brown suffering from stab wounds, said LAPD Det. Dave Garrido.

Brown was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:42 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Investigators think Brown got into an argument inside a home with a 48-year-old black woman he was dating, Garrido said.

The woman, identified by police as Roshawn Knight, stabbed Brown during the argument, then fled in a large SUV, Garrido said.

Authorities found Knight in Hunt County, Texas, on Jan. 3, according to online jail records. Knight is awaiting extradition to Los Angeles, where she faces murder charges, police said.

Eduardo Gonzalez, a 40-year-old Latino male, died Sunday, Dec. 31, after being shot in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Todd Dunlap, a 45-year-old black man, was found Dec. 31, 2017, with fatal stab wounds in the 900 block of Elm Avenue in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Long Beach police responded about 6 a.m. to call about a man down, according to a news release. Police found Dunlap in an alley with an injury to his head, the release said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:23 a.m., according to coroner’s records. 

Later that day, officers arrested Ernest Weston, 87, and James Leonard Pettie, 58, at the apartment they had shared with Dunlap in the 400 block of 5th Street, less than a mile from the scene, according to officials. Police say Weston stabbed Dunlap and Leonard helped dump the body in the alley. Authorities did not disclose the location of the attack.

Jorge Alberto Reyes Jr., a 23-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, Dec. 31, at 8622 Balboa Blvd. in Northridge, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly after 6 p.m., officers responded to a call of shots fired and found Reyes in the parking lot of a Kentucky Fried Chicken, according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department.

Reyes was pronounced dead at the scene at 7 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Investigators think Reyes and two friends drove to the KFC and the driver of the car went inside, Los Angeles Police Det. Ryan Verna said.

A Latino then approached the car and began arguing with Reyes, police said. The man punched Reyes then pulled out a gun and began firing, Verna said.

Reyes got out of the car and began running but was struck by gunfire and fell to the ground.

Uriel German Cortes, a 26-year-old Latino male, died Saturday, Dec. 30, after being shot in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Oscar Sandoval, a 39-year-old Latino male, died Saturday, Dec. 30, after being shot in Winnetka, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Scott Michael Sterling, a 42-year-old white male, died Friday, Dec. 29, after sustaining blunt force trauma near 221 E. 14th St. in Downtown, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Major Alan Langer, a 75-year-old white man, was shot to death, Friday, Dec. 29, in the 300 block of East San Antonio Drive in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

About 2:25 p.m., Long Beach police responded to call about a shooting at a law firm in the Bixby Knolls neighborhood, according to Sgt. Brad Johnson. Officers found Langer and another man dead. Langer was pronounced dead at 3:01 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

The other man, later identified as John Alexander Mendoza, 58, shot Langer and another man and then shot himself in the head, Johnson said. The men were partners at the law office of Perona, Langer, Beck, Serbin, Mendoza and Harrison, according to police and the firm.

Damian Valladares, a 23-year-old Latino male, died Friday, Dec. 29, after being stabbed in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Steward Makeba Woodruff, a 62-year-old black male, died Friday, Dec. 29, after sustaining blunt force trauma in Downtown, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Donie Vanitzian, a 67-year-old white woman, was found dead Thursday, Dec. 28, in the 4200 block of Corinth Avenue in Del Rey, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 5:38 p.m., police responded to a home on a welfare check and found Vanitzian on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head, LAPD Lt. John Radtke said.

A man on the ground next to Vanitzian was partially conscious, and detectives think he may have ingested pills, Radtke said. The man left a suicide note, police said, and investigators found a revolver on the ground under him.

Thomas Foster, a 75-year-old white man, was charged Wednesday with one count of murder with a handgun allegation, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Brian Keith Greer, a 37-year-old black man, was fatally shot Thursday, Dec. 28, in the 100 block of East Caldwell Street in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Deputies were called about 10:30 p.m. regarding a gunshot victim and found a car in the middle of the street with Greer and his cousin David Charles Greer, 37, lying nearby, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Rodney Moore. 

Both men had been shot multiple times, Moore said, and were pronounced dead at the scene at 10:38 p.m.

The cousins were born just nine days apart and grew up in Compton, said Brian Greer’s best friend, Kwiince Lipscomb, but as teens, they took separate paths.

David Greer got involved in a gang, Lipscomb said.
