Siosifa Maama, a 21-year-old Tongan man, was shot and killed Wednesday, July 19, in the 11400 block of South Broadway in the Broadway-Manchester area of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 10 p.m., between four and six people drove to a marijuana dispensary and tried to rob the store, Los Angeles Police Det. Nate Kouri said.

The would-be robbers struggled with Maama, a security guard, who was shot.

Two other people inside the business also were shot, Kouri said. A third person was wounded and ran away.

Maama was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:10 p.m., according to coroner’s records. The other shooting victims are expected to survive their injuries, authorities said.

Some of the suspects, described only as black men and possibly about 30 years old, fled on foot, while others drove away in a light-colored sedan, Kouri said.

Ruby Zepeda, a 44-year-old Latino female, died Wednesday, July 19, after being shot near 126 N. Ash Ave. in Inglewood, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Angel Gustavo Balanzar Martinez, an 18-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Wednesday, July 19, in the 6200 block of South San Pedro Street in Florence, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 11:30 p.m., Balanzar Martinez was shot while trying to steal beer from a convenience store, said Los Angeles Police Det. Dan Gersna.

Balanzar Martinez got into an escalating altercation with a store worker, Gersna said.

A person who did not work at the store shot Balanzar Martinez, Gersna said.

Balanzar Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:44 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Gersna declined to comment further, citing the pending investigation.

Junior Aceves, a 19-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Tuesday, July 18, in the 4200 block of West 103rd Street in the South Bay neighborhood of Lennox, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Aceves was riding his bicycle in the street around 12:35 a.m. on West 103rd Street near South Freeman Avenue, a few blocks from his home, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Cotter said.

A green four-door sedan with two men inside swerved into Aceves as he was riding near the sidewalk, Cotter said. 

“It looks like they used the car to attack him,” Cotter said. “Or at least they tried to use the car to attack him. The evidence suggests that they hit him with the car, but he was able to get up and run.”

The car crashed into a light pole, and the men jumped out and chased after Aceves, heading west on 103rd Street, …

Fernando Mendez Jr., a 28-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Tuesday, July 18, in the 2800 block of Walnut Avenue in Signal Hill, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Mendez was in the parking lot of the Fantasy Castle strip club at Walnut Avenue and East 28th Street about 1:50 a.m. when a “male figure” walked up to him and began shooting, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Cotter said. 

“We say he’s a ‘male figure’ because he appeared to be male, but he was wearing all dark clothing with a hooded sweatshirt pulled over his face, so you couldn’t see any of his features, race or anything,” Cotter said. 

Mendez, who lived in Long Beach, was pronounced dead at the scene at 2 a.m., with gunshot wounds to the torso, according to coroner’s records.

Jose Eduardo Ornelas, a 41-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Tuesday, July 18, in the 14800 block of South Spring Street in West Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Ornelas was shot in an industrial area where many motor homes are parked, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Cotter said. “For lack of a better term, it looks like a homeless encampment,” he said. 

Ornelas had parked a motor home on the street in the days before his shooting, Cotter said. Around 2:25 a.m., he was standing in the street talking to a woman in a vehicle when a white SUV pulled up beside them, Cotter said. 

“A male got out of the driver’s seat, yelled something at both of them, and then he started shooting,” Cotter said. 

Both the woman and Ornelas were struck by gunfire and taken to a hospital, Cotter said.

Steven Alvarez, a 19-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Tuesday, July 18, in the 1600 block of McDonald Avenue in Wilmington, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 8:40 p.m., Alvarez was sitting in a dark-colored BMW sedan when one or more people walked up and shot him, Los Angeles Police Det. Scott Coffee said.

Police said the gunman fled on foot.

Alvarez was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:50 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Alvarez was in the area to visit his girlfriend, Coffee said. The shooting is believed to be connected to gang activity in the area. Police are looking for witnesses.

Efren Chairez Diaz, a 29-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Tuesday, July 18, in the 1400 block of North Marine Avenue in Wilmington, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly after 10 p.m., Diaz was standing with a group of people when a person walked up and shot him, Los Angeles Police Officer George Romulo said.

The gunman ran north on North Marine Avenue, then east into an alley toward North Avalon Boulevard, Romulo said.

The gunman is described only as a man of unknown descent with a slim build and about 5 foot 6.

Police think he was wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt and still are trying to determine why someone would have targeted Diaz.

Ricardo Gaytan Ramirez, a 36-year-old Latino, died Tuesday, July 18, after he was shot in the 400 block of Union Drive in Westlake, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Ramirez was at a car wash fundraiser for a friend who had been fatally shot by police when a sedan drove by about 2:30 p.m. July 15, and shots were fired from the car, Los Angeles Police Det. John Melendez said.

Ramirez and another person were wounded in the shooting. Ramirez was taken to a hospital, where he died three days later. The other person is expected to survive.

Melendez said the shooter’s vehicle may have been a green or gray Honda Accord with paper plates. No words were exchanged before the shooting, he said.

Diane Susan Taylor, a 66-year-old white female, died Monday, July 17, after being shot in Chatsworth, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Samuel Isaac-Jesus Jimenez, a 23-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, July 15, in the 9000 block of Long Beach Boulevard in South Gate, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Jimenez and an unnamed woman checked into the Oak Tree motel at 9010 Long Beach Blvd., in the early evening of July 15, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza said. 

The South Gate Police Department received a call at 7:06 p.m. about gunshots coming from Jimenez’s room, Mendoza said. 

Before officers arrived, a woman was seen leaving the room and running north on Long Beach Boulevard, Mendoza said. 

Jimenez was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:21 p.m., according to coroner’s records. Investigators said he had at least one gunshot wound to his upper body. 

Officials are trying to find the woman, whom they consider a “person of interest.” She was described only as a Latina in her 30s.
