Luis Garcia, a 25-year-old Latino, died Thursday, May 25, after he was shot by a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy in the 900 block of North Santa Fe Avenue in Compton, according to sheriff’s investigators. 

Garcia allegedly fired on two deputies during a traffic stop about 11:40 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24, said Lt. Joe Mendoza. One of the deputies was struck by gunfire as he opened the back door of the car in which Garcia was a passenger. 

The fallen deputy’s partner returned fire, striking Garcia, Mendoza said. 

The injured deputy and Garcia were taken to a hospital. 

Garcia was pronounced dead at the hospital shortly after midnight on May 25, Mendoza said.  Coroner’s records are unavailable because investigators put a security hold on the autopsy results until their investigation is completed, Mendoza said.

Maria Magdalena Figueroa, a 39-year-old Latina, was fatally stabbed Wednesday, May 24, in the 8300 block of Florence Avenue in Downey, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Downey police responded at about 1:30 p.m. to a call about a woman stabbed in the area, according to Sgt. Tim Lau. Officers found Figueroa, from Maywood, suffering from several knife wounds, Lau said. 

Figueroa was transported to a local hospital where she died at 1:55 p.m., according to coroner’s records. 

Witnesses at the scene told detectives that Figueroa was stabbed by her ex-boyfriend, Anthony Jesus Ramirez, 39, who fled the scene and was involved in a traffic collision nearby, according to Lau. Officers arrested him at the accident scene.

On May 26, prosecutors charged Ramirez with murder and assault with a deadly weapon. 

Ramirez was convicted in 2011 of shooting at an inhabited dwelling, according to the felony complaint.

Darrell Edwards, a 54-year-old black man, was shot and killed Wednesday, May 24, at Imperial Highway and South Western Avenue in Westmont, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Edwards was driving his dark-colored Audi sedan east on Imperial Highway at 6:44 p.m., when he stopped at a red light in the left-turn lane onto Western Avenue, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza said. 

A dark-colored compact car drove up next to Edwards’ car, and a man in the rear passenger seat got out with a gun, Mendoza said. 

The man walked to the front passenger side of Edwards’ car and shot Edwards through the open window, Mendoza said. The shooter, described only as a black man between 20 and 30 years old, got back into the car, which turned south onto Western Avenue and drove away.

Diego Alvaro Diaz, a 24-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Wednesday, May 24, in the 1000 block of East Mission Road in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Pomona police received a call about 11 p.m. reporting shots fired, according to a police news release. Upon arriving, officers found Diaz, of Riverside, with several gunshot wounds.

He was transported to a local hospital where he died at 11:41 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Antonio Vasquez, a 17-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Tuesday, May 23, in the 700 block of East 79th Street in Florence, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 1 p.m., Vasquez and a 22-year-old man drove up to a market, said Los Angeles Police Det. Dave Garrido.

As Vasquez got out of the car, a male with a gun walked out of the market opened fire, Garrido said. Vasquez tried to run away but was wounded and collapsed on a street corner.

The gunman fled on foot. Vasquez was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:22 p.m., according to coroner’s records. The 22-year-old was not injured.

Roberto Cisneros, a 28-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Monday, May 22, in the 2400 block of South Trinity Street in Historic-South Central, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 2:30 a.m., Cisneros was at a park in the area when he was approached by a person who shot him, said Los Angeles Police Det. Dan Gersna.

Cisneros was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:52 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Cisneros used to live in the area and frequented the park, Gersna said. It’s unknown if there were one or more people involved in the shooting.

Gersna declined to comment on any motive.

Azikiwe Christopher Onwuemelie, a 19-year-old black man, was shot and killed Saturday, May 20, in the the 23000 block of South Livewood Lane in Harbor City, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Onwuemelie was at a gathering at a home just before 1 a.m. when someone began shooting, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Rodney Moore. 

Two men, Onwuemelie and a friend, were shot, and both were taken to the hospital by friends, Moore said. 

Onwuemelie was pronounced dead at the hospital at 1:30 a.m., according to coroner’s records. The cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound to the chest. 

His friend was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the upper torso and was listed as stable, Moore said.  

Investigators don’t know the motive for the shooting. The gunman was described only as a black man in his early 20s.

Robert Larkin, a 19-year-old black male, was fatally shot Friday, May 19, in the 1200 block of West 90th Street in the Westmont neighborhood of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

The incident began at 9:56 p.m. when Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene regarding a gunshot victim, said Lt. Rodney Moore. 

Witnesses told investigators that Larkin was outside when a light-colored SUV drove up and someone inside began shooting.

The deputies found Larkin lying in a driveway with at least one gunshot wound, Moore said. 

Larkin was pronounced dead at the scene at 10 p.m., according to coroner’s records. The cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound to the back. 

Investigators were looking for a motive for the shooting and more information about the gunman, described only as a black male.

Bryan De La Torrre, a 21-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Thursday, May 18, in the 1500 block of Wilcox Avenue in Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 11 p.m., officers from the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a call of a shooting in the area, police said. When officers arrived, they found De La Torre, who had been shot, in an alley next to an apartment building, according to a news release from the LAPD.

Investigators believe two people kicked in De La Torre’s apartment door, then shot him. De La Torre then jumped out the apartment window, police said. De La Torre was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead on May 19 at 12:21 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

The suspects were described as Latino, 20 to 30 years old. One man was wearing a Dodgers jacket, police said.

Jesse Ayala, a 45-year-old Latino, died Friday, May 19, after sustaining blunt force trauma months earlier in the 800 block of East Holt Avenue in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

On Jan. 26, a man who had earlier assaulted two people was walking along East Holt Avenue, said Sgt. Brian Hagerty of the Pomona Police Department. The man approached Ayala and attempted to strike him.

A fight then broke out and Ayala was knocked down and struck his head, Hagerty said. 

Police arrested Joshua Jelani Bull, 27. Ayala was taken to the hospital.

According to coroner’s records, Ayala was in coma for four months before he died at 10:19 p.m. on May 19.

Bull is in custody charged with assault. Prosecutors will decide on murder charges once the investigation is complete, according to a spokesperson for the L.A. County district attorney.
