Jacinto Magana, a 27-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, Feb. 25, at the corner of Parmelee Avenue and Nadeau Street in the Florence-Firestone neighborhood of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Magana lived in the neighborhood and had been visiting friends at an automotive shop when he decided to walk to a store shortly after noon, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Troy Ewing. 

As he was walking through the residential area, he was confronted by three men who shot him multiple times, Ewing said.  

Magana was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at 12:50 p.m., according to coroner's records.

“There was some kind of altercation, and we think it might have been an attempted robbery, but that area has a heavy population of miscellaneous gangs ... so we really don’t know,” Ewing said.

Rodrick Paul King, a 24-year-old black man, died Saturday Feb. 24, nearly eight years after he was shot in the 2400 block of Carmona Avenue in Mid-City, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

On April 6, 2009, at about 1:30 p.m., King and two others were walking on a sidewalk when they encountered a man who pulled out a gun and began shooting, said Los Angeles Police Det. Sean Kinchla.

King was left a parapalegic after the shooting and was recently hospitalized again, according to coroner’s records.

King was pronounced dead Feb. 24; the coroner’s office has ruled the case a homicide.

Patrick Short, a 19-year-old black male, died Friday, Feb. 24, after being shot in Lancaster, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Baby Girl Reeves, a black female, died Thursday, Feb. 23, after being shot in Vermont Knolls, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Jonah Min Hwang, an 8-year-old boy, was shot and killed Monday, Feb. 20, in the 1100 block of West 111th Street in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 6:30 p.m., Jonah was in the living room of a home with other children and adults. The residents of the home had invited a family over to dinner, Pomona Police Lt. Eddie Vazquez said.  

A car pulled up outside and a person began shooting. Jonah was the only person who was struck by the gunfire, Vazquez said.

Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel treated the boy before rushing him to a hospital, said supervising fire dispatcher Ed Pickett, who confirmed that the boy had been shot in the head.

Police do not believe the residents have any gang connections, but this is the second time the house had been shot at in three weeks, Vazquez said.

Roy Roger Torres, a 47-year-old Latino, died Monday, Feb. 20, after he was shot in the 1400 block of Volney Drive in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Torres moved into the garage outside his family home two years earlier to help care for his ailing father, family member Gina Gomez told The Times.

Investigators have released few details about the shooting, but they believe Torres’ cousin, Christopher Michael Mejia, 26, shot him in the garage sometime during the night or early morning of Feb. 20, and then stole his car, a Dodge sedan, which had been parked outside, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Bill Cotter. 

Torres was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:29 a.m., according to coroner’s records. Police believe Mejia shot two Whittier Police Department officers, killing one, about two and a half hours later.

Whittier Police Officer Keith Boyer, a 53-year-old white man, was shot and killed on Monday, Feb. 20, at the intersection of Colima Road and Mar Vista Street in Whittier, according to authorities. 

Boyer and two other officers were called to the scene to investigate a traffic collision about 8 a.m. when one of the drivers in the accident pulled out a gun and began shooting, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina told The Times. 

The officers returned fire and three people were struck, including Christopher Michael Mejia, 26, a felon investigators would later learn was a suspect in the fatal shooting of his cousin earlier that morning in East Los Angeles. 

Both Mejia and Patrick Hazell, a Whittier officer with three years on the force, were injured and taken to the hospital with injuries they are expected to survive.

Nicole Danielle Biewener, a 23-year-old Latino female, died Sunday, Feb. 19, after being shot in Covina, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Alejandro Rojas, a 22-year-old Latino, died Sunday, Feb. 19, after he was stabbed in the 4200 block of Peck Road in El Monte, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Rojas was walking to a store with a relative about 11:40 a.m., when a car pulled alongside them and a man got out, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Jauch. 

The man exchanged words with the pair, and the three began to fight, Jauch said. The assailant pulled out a knife and stabbed Rojas in the chest. 

Rojas and his relative ran to a nearby residence, where Rojas collapsed. He was taken to a hospital and was pronounced dead at 12:40 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Rojas' relative was not injured, Jauch said. The attacker, described only as Latino, got back into his car and drove away northbound.

Lynda Doi Fick, a 68-year-old Asian woman, was found dead Sunday, Feb. 19, in the 700 block of South Rancho Sinaloa Drive in Covina, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

About 6:15 p.m. Feb. 18, Covina police were called to the home of Lynda Fick and Lucas Doi Fick, a 36-year-old parolee, said Sgt. Antonia Zavala of the Covina Police Department. 

Shortly before midnight, officers knocked on the door to the Covina home. No one answered, but police saw lights go off inside the house and believed someone was inside, Zavala said. 

Officers surrounded the house and ordered Lucas Fick to come out. When he did not comply, officers got a warrant, and a SWAT team entered.

Inside, police found the bodies of Lynda Fick, Lucas Fick's mother, and Nicole Biewener, 23, who had recently begun dating the man. Both were pronounced dead at 12:36 a.m, according to coroner’s …

Irma Cuevas, a 62-year-old Latina, was found dead Sunday, Feb. 19, in the 2600 block of West Olympic Boulevard in Pico-Union, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 10:30 a.m., police received a call about a person who was motionless on the sidewalk, said Los Angeles Police Det. Sean Kinchla.

Officers found Cuevas, who had been stabbed. She was pronounced dead at 10:38 a.m. at the scene, according to coroner’s records.

Police believe Cuevas, a transient who was known in the area, was killed sometime after 10 p.m.

Kirinda Lavar Morehead, a 39-year-old black man, was shot and killed Saturday, Feb. 18, in the 2300 block of Bashor Street in Duarte, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Morehead and his wife had parked their two cars near their apartment about 8 p.m., Lt. Steve Jauch said.

As Morehead’s wife walked toward the house, Morehead was transferring items from one car to another, with his two young children strapped into their car seats in his car, Jauch said. 

A white vehicle pulled up alongside Morehead and someone inside began shooting, striking Morehead several times, Jauch said. 

Morehead was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:18 p.m., according to coroner’s records. 

Morehead’s children and his wife were not injured, Jauch said. 

Investigators don’t have a description of the people in the car or a motive for the shooting. Morehead worked in construction and was not involved in gangs, Jauch …
