Dion Leonard Moss, a 45-year-old black man, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, after he was shot at the corner of Compton Avenue and 118th Street in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Investigators were called about 4:35 p.m. about gunshots, said Lt. Joe Mendoza. 

Police found Moss, who had been shot multiple times, sitting in the driver’s seat of a parked car, Mendoza said. Moss’s two adult passengers, a black woman and a black man, were not injured. 

Moss was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:48 p.m. with a gunshot wound to the head, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Witnesses said the three friends were talking in the parked car when another car pulled up and at least one person inside began shooting, Mendoza said.

Victor Duenas Jr., a 25-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Wednesday, Dec. 7, in the 4700 block of Gray Drive in El Sereno, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 7:40 p.m., Duenas was standing on the front porch of his home when a person walked up and fired multiple rounds, said Los Angeles Police Det. Jose Ramirez. Duenas staggered inside and collapsed.

Duenas was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:04 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Police are trying to determine if the gunman drove up to Duenas’ home or if he was walking through the neighborhood.

There is no suspect information available.

Leonardo Saldana Jr., a 21-year-old Latino male, died Tuesday, Dec. 6, after being stabbed at 7300 MEDICAL CENTER DRIVE, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Samantha Rae Lang, a 29-year-old white woman, was found dead Tuesday, Dec. 6, in the 1000 block of West Carson Street in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

About 10:30 a.m. Dec. 5, Long Beach police responded to a call about a vandalized vehicle near the L.A. River. Officers discovered that the car belonged to Lang, but they could not find her. Investigators then searched the area and found her body about 1:30 a.m on Dec. 6. She had been strangled.

Detectives arrested of Lang’s ex-boyfriend, 41-year-old Justin James Johnson, on suspicion of murder. 

Johnson pleaded not guilty to one count of murder Dec. 14. He scheduled to return to court Wednesday for a pretrial hearing.

Julio Diaz-Castro, a 40-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Sunday, Dec. 4, in the 700 block of West Gage Avenue in Vermont-Slauson, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before midnight on Dec. 3, Diaz-Castro was in a liquor store when a Latino walked in and shot him, said Los Angeles police Det. Chris Barling.

As Diaz-Castro tried to run away, more shots were fired. Diaz-Castro collapsed just outside the store and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives believe that the incident could be related to some car vandalism that occurred near the store about 10 minutes before the shooting, but they are still trying to determine exactly what prompted the attack, Barling said.

Angela Hernandez, a 24-year-old Latino female, died Sunday, Dec. 4, after being shot in Tarzana, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Isidro Marquez Jr., a 29-year-old Latino, died Saturday, Dec. 3, after he was shot in the 15800 block of Gale Avenue in Hacienda Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records. 

Deputies were called to the 99 Cent Store shopping center on Gale Avenue, just east of South Hacienda Boulevard, around 8:09 a.m., regarding a person who was not breathing, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Troy Ewing. 

The caller, a U-Haul employee, told investigators he was parking a rental truck when he noticed a white, older model Honda Civic parked behind the businesses with its engine running and front passenger door open, Ewing said. 

When the caller checked the car, he discovered Marquez's body in the front seat and dialed 911. 

Marquez had a gunshot wound to the head, Ewing said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:20 a.m.

Donald Dewayne Gathright, a 33-year-old black man, was shot and killed on Saturday, Dec. 3, in the 300 block of East 142nd Street in Willowbrook, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.  

Gathright lived in Moreno Valley, according to coroner's records, but he was visiting friends about 5:12 p.m. when the shooting occurred, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Troy Ewing. 

"All we know is he was hanging out with some people outside and then gunshots were heard," Ewing said. "A neighbor looked out the window, saw the victim lying on the driveway and called 911. When deputies arrived, several people were hanging out on the street, but they refused to give us any assistance or accounts about what happened."

Gathright was shot twice, Ewing said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:35 p.m., according to coroner's records.

Yvonne Yelice Moore, a 50-year-old black female, died Saturday, Dec. 3, in Baldwin Hills/Crenshaw, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Paul Mark Reed Jr., a 26-year-old black man, died Saturday, Dec. 3, after he was shot near East 109th Place and Wilmington Avenue in Watts, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 11 p.m. on Dec. 2, Reed was sitting inside a vehicle when shots were fired and he was struck, said Los Angeles Police Det. Nathan Kouri. Police believe the shooter fired from the sidewalk, but it’s unknown if words were exchanged prior to the incident.

A man sitting in the driver's side of the vehicle was not injured.

Reed was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead the following day at 10:40 p.m. according to coroner’s records.

Police believe more than one person got into a vehicle and fled, but it’s unknown what kind of vehicle was involved.

Siaufung “Bosco” Tjan, a 50-year-old Chinese man, was fatally stabbed Friday, Dec. 2, inside a building at the University of Southern California in the 3600 block of McClintock Avenue, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 4:30 p.m., police received a 911 call about a victim with multiple stab wounds, said LAPD Det. Meghan Aguilar. Responding firefighters found Tjan’s body inside his 10th-floor office in the Seeley G. Mudd building. 

Tjan was stabbed in the chest, and a 28-year-old student was taken into custody, police said.

“We want to make clear this was not a random act,” Aguilar said. “This victim was targeted by the suspect.”

Tjan was an expert in adaptations that people make to overcome central vision loss.
