Maurice Marshall, a 33-year-old black man, was shot and killed Friday, July 4, in the 600 block of West 50th Street in Vermont Square, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Shortly before 8 a.m., Marshall was standing near a parked vehicle with another man when a light-colored sedan drove by, then made a u-turn, said Los Angeles Police Det. Sal LaBarbera. A person inside the car yelled a gang slogan, and a passenger inside fired several rounds at Marshall and the other man, LaBarbera said.
Marshall was struck by the gunfire. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:09 a.m., said Ed Winter, a coroner’s spokesman. The other man was not injured.

Darian Lytle, a 23-year-old black man, was shot and killed Friday, July 4, in the 7200 block of Petrol in Paramount, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Lytle was visiting another person at an apartment complex and stepped outside about 10 p.m. to get something from his car, said Det. Jeffrey Cochran with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.
As Lytle was walking to his car, he was confronted by a gunman, who asked Lytle where he was from then opened fire, Cochran said. The gunman fled on foot.
Lytle was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:46 p.m. Cochran said he doesn’t believe Lytle knew the gunman.

Kayon Keith Dafney, a 23-year-old black man, was shot and killed Friday, July 4, in the 1900 block of East 65th Street in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 12:30 p.m., Long Beach Police officers responded to a call of shots fired and found Dafney in an alley, according to a news release from the department.
Dafney was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:54 p.m., said Ed Winter, a coroner’s spokesman.

Ernesto Topete, a 21-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Friday, July 4, in the 1100 block of West 131st Street in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Topete was standing in front of a home about 8:45 p.m. when a vehicle drove by and a person inside opened fire, said Lt. Dave Dolson with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Another man was also injured in the shooting but is expected to survive, Dolson said.
Topete was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:17 p.m., said Ed Winter, a coroner’s spokesman. Dolson did not have a vehicle description.

John Agbor Takoh Takoh, a 42-year-old black male, died Friday, July 4, after sustaining blunt force trauma in Westmont, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
A 24-year-old man was sentenced Apr. 24, 2014, to state prison for a 2009 killing in East Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
Ramiro Chavez was sentenced to 12 years in prison for the shooting death of Paolo Aldeveran Centeno.
In March, Chavez pleaded no contest to one count of voluntary manslaughter.
Centeno, 19, was shot and killed June 27, 2009, in the 5900 block of Northside Drive in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Centeno was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:33 a.m.

A 34-year-old man was sentenced July 2 to prison for a 2010 killing in Downey, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Rand Rubin sentenced Larry Paul Trujillo to 25 years to life in prison for the shooting death of Hermilio Franco.
In May, Trujillo pleaded no contest to one count of first-degree murder.
Franco, 53, was shot and killed Nov. 3, 2010, in the 9300 block of Gainford Street in Downey, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Franco and his wife awoke after Trujillo and an unknown second assailant entered the Downey home, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.
Franco, who appeared in various Mexican films, grabbed his gun and shot Trujillo in the neck, paralyzing him. The second assailant escaped, but Trujillo was unable to move.

Julio Benicio Perez, a 25-year-old Latino male, died Tuesday, July 1, after being shot in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Frank Burnell Taylor, a 35-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Tuesday, July 1, in the 500 block of South Maple Avenue in Montebello, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Around 7:15 p.m., Taylor was walking down the street when a gray Chevy pickup truck pulled alongside him, said Capt. Luis Lopez with the Montebello Police Department.
The driver of the truck got out of the vehicle and fired several shots at Taylor, Lopez said. Another person was also in the truck.
The gunman and Taylor were involved in a personal dispute over “street business,” Lopez said. He declined to elaborate.
On July 9, police arrested Michael Joseph Fimbres, a 44-year-old Latino, on a probation violation. Fimbres is believed to be connected to the killing, Lopez said.

Amari Findley, a black female, died Monday, June 30, after sustaining blunt force trauma in Chesterfield Square, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Lavell Lee Smith, a 33-year-old black man, was shot and killed Sunday, June 29, in the 1100 block of North Vermont Avenue in East Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Smith was shot after attending a party in a restaurant banquet hall shortly after 5 a.m., said Ed Winter, a spokesman with the coroner’s office.
Los Angeles police responded to a call of a shooting about 5:20 a.m. and found Smith with multiple gunshot wounds, according to a news release from the department.
Smith was pronounced dead at 5:52 a.m., Winter said.
Police said they are looking for a black man with black hair between the ages of 20 and 25 with a goatee and black braids.
