Marvin Ponce, a 37-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Wednesday, Aug. 3, near 7th Avenue and Brooks Court in Venice, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 4 p.m., Ponce was directing traffic at a construction site when a masked man approached, aimed a revolver and opened fire, police said.

Ponce, 37, was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:18 p.m.

Co-workers at Right of Way -- a San Dimas company that provides traffic control for construction sites, film shoots and other events -- said Ponce was a cherished employee who left behind a 1-year-old daughter.

Ponce, a resident of San Fernando, had worked at the company for three years. The shooting happened on the company’s first day at the construction site in the Oakwood section of Venice, a neighborhood bounded by Lincoln and Abbot Kinney boulevards with a legacy of gang violence.

Danny Ed Adams, a 57-year-old white male, died Wednesday, Aug. 3, after sustaining blunt force trauma in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

William Armand Bowers, a 51-year-old white man, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy Tuesday, Aug. 2, near 31558 Castaic Road in Castaic, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Bowers, who was homeless, was staying in the Castaic area, said Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza. Around 9 p.m., two patrol deputies spotted Bowers riding his bike in the parking lot of the Rodeway Motel, and ordered him to stop so they could search him,  Mendoza said. 

The deputies had arrested Bowers in the past and  knew he was on probation, Mendoza said. The terms of his probation allowed police to stop and search him at any time to see if he was complying. 

Bowers ignored the deputies’ commands and rode away from them, Mendoza said. The deputies reported that they saw Bowers reach into his pocket and throw away a small item, Mendoza said.

Branden Marcel Davis, a 21-year-old black man, was shot and killed Monday, Aug. 1, in the 500 block of North Sloan Avenue in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records. 

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies went to Davis' home after receiving a 911 call about gunshots about 10:40 p.m.

Deputies found Davis lying in his driveway with multiple gunshot wounds, said Lt. Steve Jauch. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:10 p.m., according to coroner's records. 

Investigators learned that a man confronted Davis in his frontyard and fired several shots at him, Jauch said. 

"We have no suspect description other than he was a male," Jauch said. 

Investigators don't have a motive for the shooting, Jauch said, and they don't know how the shooter left the area.

DeWayne Parham Jr., a 42-year-old black man, was fatally shot Sunday, July 31, 2016, in the 6200 block of Harvard Boulevard in the Harvard Park neighborhood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 5:30 p.m., Parham was standing with other people in the area when a person walked up and shot him, said LAPD Det. Chris Barling.No one else was injured.

Parham was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police are trying to determine a motive in the killing. Parham was not a documented gang member, Barling said.

Ernesto Cervantes, a 19-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, July 31, in the 200 block of North Alma Avenue in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Cervantes was walking south on the residential street around 3:28 a.m. when he passed a house where there was a party and some people standing in the frontyard, said Lt. Eddie Hernandez. 

Witnesses told investigators that Cervantes “exchanged some brief words with the individuals,” said Hernandez. “There was no loud arguing – something was said to somebody about something, and then shots rang out.” 

Investigators believe at least two people in the frontyard opened fire on Cervantes, Hernandez said. “The victim was seen running a short distance, and then he collapsed in the middle of the street,” he said. 

Cervantes was pronounced dead at the scene at 4 a.m. with multiple gunshot wounds, according to coroner’s records.

Raul Cervantes, a 24-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, July 30, on the Gage Bridge in the 5400 block of Gage Avenue in Bell, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Bell police found Cervantes lying near the bike path entrance on the western descent from the bridge after receiving a call about shots being fired at 1:41 p.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Rosson.

Cervantes was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:56 p.m. with a gunshot wound to the chest, according to coroner’s records. 

Rosson said video footage of the shooting shows Cervantes standing at the entrance to the bike path when a Latino adult walked up to him and opened fire. The gunman was last seen running west off the bridge on foot. 

Cervantes had ties to a gang in Bell, Rosson said, and investigators believe the shooter was a member of a rival …

Marcus Jarrod Wilkerson, a 46-year-old black man, was fatally shot Friday, July 29, 2016, near West Gage and South Western avenues in Harvard Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 6 a.m. a person found Wilkerson lying on a sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the stomach, said LAPD Det. Chris Barling.

Wilkerson, who lived in the area, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witness statements lead police to believe the shooting occurred about an hour earlier. Barling said investigators believe Wilkerson was involved in some sort of dispute.

Jennifer Ann Dickerson, a 31-year-old black woman, was fatally shot Friday, July 29, in the 1300 block of West Pacific Coast Highway in Harbor City, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 1:50 p.m., at least five people were working at a barbecue stand in a Pep Boys parking lot when a person walked up and began shooting, Los Angeles police Officer George Romulo said.

Dickerson and a 34-year-old man were struck by the gunfire, Romulo said. Police are reviewing surveillance footage in the area.

The suspect has been described as a black man who was wearing some sort of mask or bandanna around his face, Romulo said.

Dickerson was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead at 3 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Police are still trying to determine a motive, but said Dickerson was not the intended target.

Vantha Tho, a 35-year-old Asian woman, was shot and killed Thursday, July 28, in the 100 block of Herondo Street in Hermosa Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Tho, a hair stylist and former Miss Cambodia America 1998, was sleeping in the room she rented just two blocks from the beach when her former boyfriend snuck into her room about 6:27 a.m. and began shooting, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Rosson. 

“According to witnesses, there was no argument, just one scream and then the shots,” Rosson said. 

Tho was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:49 a.m. with gunshot wounds to the head, according to coroner’s records. 

Her estranged boyfriend, Angel Marquez, a 32-year-old Latino who lived in Los Angeles, shot himself immediately afterwards and was also pronounced dead at the scene, according to coroner’s records.

Donnell Thompson Jr., a 27-year-old black man, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputy Thursday, July 28, in the 800 block of West Stockwell Street in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Initially, the department said Thompson was an armed carjacking suspect who had fired at deputies, but on Aug. 9, authorities said that the man had nothing to do with that crime or the assault on deputies.

“Knowing what we know now, do we wish it hadn’t happened? It speaks for itself,” said Capt. Steven Katz, head of the sheriff’s homicide bureau.

The incident began in the early hours of July 28, when a man used a gun to commandeer a 2012 gray Honda Civic at 48th Street and Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles, Katz said.

Omar Gonzalez, a 36-year-old Latino, was fatally shot by a police officer Thursday, July 28, in the 1200 block of Atwood Place in Boyle Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 7:20 p.m., officers with the Los Angeles Police Department began chasing a stolen car, said LAPD Sgt. Frank Preciado.

The pursuit lasted just a few minutes before coming to an end in a cul-de-sac. A man who was a passenger in the car got out of the vehicle and ran up a driveway, Preciado said.

At least one neighbor told the two police officers that the man was armed with a handgun.

One of the officers shot the man about 7:45 p.m. He was taken to the hospital and later died of his injuries, Preciado said.

It’s unclear what precipitated the shooting. Police did not specify how many times the officer fired his gun, and it’s unknown …

Nancy Ann Wright, an 85-year-old white woman, was found dead Wednesday, July 27, in the 1000 block of Palms Boulevard in Venice, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 7:30 a.m., a construction worker looked into a home’s backyard and saw a man hanging from a tree, said LAPD Det. Tyler Adams.

The man, identified as Charles Wright, an 83-year-old white man, also had a gunshot wound to the head, according to coroner’s records.

After discovering the man, police found Nancy Wright in a bedroom in the home with gunshot wounds. Nancy Wright was pronounced dead at 7:31 a.m. at the scene, according to coroner’s records.

Police believe that Charles Wright killed Nancy Wright, then hanged himself from a tree and shot himself.

Nancy Wright may have been suffering from dementia and having a difficult time with “day-to-day” activities, Adams said.

Randall Brett Merhar, a 46-year-old white man, died Thursday, July 28, after sustaining blunt force trauma in the 1400 block of North Orange Drive in Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s office. 

About 10:40 a.m. July 27, Merhar got into a dispute with a man near the parking lot of a store, according to LAPD Lt. John Radtke. Both men were transients, Radtke said. 

During the dispute, the man struck Merhar in the head with a metal pipe, Radtke said. After Merhar fell down, the assailant left the scene. 

Shortly thereafter, police arrived, and Merhar was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead the next day at 6:51 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Adolfo Francisco, a 35-year-old Latino, died Wednesday, July 27, after he was shot in the 1800 block of West 5th Street in Westlake, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 10 p.m. on July 25, Francisco was walking north on South Burlington Avenue approaching West 5th Street when someone shot him from across the street, said LAPD Det. Ray Martinez. The gunman or gunmen ran in an unknown direction.

Francisco was pronounced dead at a hospital at 6:35 p.m. on July 27, according to coroner’s records.

Police are still trying to determine a motive. Francisco was not a documented gang member, Martinez said.
