Carlota Angelica Vargas, a 70-year-old Latina, died Monday, Oct. 10, after she was pushed out a second-story window and beaten in the 7400 block of Hazeltine Avenue in Van Nuys, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 3 a.m., officers responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon at an apartment complex. When police arrived, they found Vargas on the ground in the driveway of an apartment complex, according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department. Vargas had injuries to her face, police said.

The suspect, identified by police as Vargas’ son, Fernando Vargas, a 31-year-old Latino, was also suffering from a leg injury.

Police said the son threw his mother out of a second story window, then jumped out of the window and began to beat her. Vargas was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead at 5:46 a.m., according …

Alfonso Palomares, a 40-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Sunday, Oct. 9, in the 5700 block of Ruthelen Street in Chesterfield Square, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 5 p.m., Palomares was on the sidewalk near his home when a person walked up and shot him, said Los Angeles Police Det. Chris Barling. There were some words exchanged before the shooting but it’s unclear what was said, Barling said.

A 31-year-old Latino was also struck in the leg but was expected to survive.

Palomares was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:45 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

The shooter was with a second person. Both are described as Latinos in their 20s wearing dark clothing.

Salvador Noriega, a 34-year-old Latino, died Saturday, Oct. 8, after he was shot days earlier in the 1100 block of East 77th Street in the South Los Angeles neighborhood of Florence, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Noriega was riding his bike about 1:15 a.m. Oct. 6 when he was shot in the back and the leg, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Det. Eddie Aguirre. Noriega was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:51 p.m. two days later. 

Investigators believe the shooting, near 77th Street's intersection with South Central Avenue, was gang-related, Aguirre said, because Noriega was a member of a local gang.

The street where Noriega was shot is on the border of Sheriff’s Department and Los Angeles Police Department jurisdictions, Aguirre said.

Romarion Lamar White, a 49-year-old Black male, died Saturday, Oct. 8, after being shot by law enforcement near 32nd Street East & Thomas Avenue in Palmdale, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Russell Lavell McNeil Jr., a 35-year-old black man, was shot and killed Friday, Oct. 7, in the 1000 block of West 122nd Street in the South Los Angeles neighborhood of Athens, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

McNeil was sitting on a block wall outside his house before 8 p.m., waiting for his date to pick him up, when someone with a gun approached and opened fire, said Sgt. Bill Cotter. 

After the shooting, the gunman got into a car, which drove away, Cotter said. Investigators don’t have a description of the shooter or the vehicle, and it’s not known if anyone else was in the car, Cotter said. 

McNeil was found on the sidewalk with multiple gunshot wounds, and several bullet casings scattered on the ground. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:58 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Ellis Edgar Calvin III, a 21-year-old black man, was shot and killed Thursday, Oct. 6, in the 1200 block of West 109th Street in Westmont, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

About 3:23 p.m., Calvin and a female friend were in a car parked in Calvin's driveway, L.A. County Sheriff's Lt. Steve Jauch said. A black man walked up and started shooting, striking Calvin and the woman, Jauch said.

Calvin’s mother drove them to the hospital, Jauch said. Calvin was pronounced dead at 4:45 p.m. with multiple gunshot wounds, according to coroner's records. The woman was expected to survive, Jauch said. 

The shooter was last seen running west on 109th Street, Jauch said.

Raul Alexander Sanchez, a 26-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Thursday, Oct. 6, in the 700 block of East 46th Street in South Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 10:15 a.m., Sanchez was on a sidewalk off East 46th Street when people approached in a vehicle and began shooting, said Los Angeles Police Det. Dan Gersna.

Gersna declined to say whether Sanchez was alone, or if the suspect or suspects got out of the vehicle.

Sanchez was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:47 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Gersna declined to give a vehicle description.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Sgt. Steven Craig Owen, a 53-year-old white man, was shot and killed Wednesday, Oct. 5, in the 3200 block of West Avenue J-7 in Lancaster, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Owen, a 29-year department veteran, had responded to a seemingly routine burglary call at an apartment building around 12:35 p.m. 

Maria Azuela, 33, had called deputies to her home after a loud noise drew her downstairs, where she spotted a broken glass door.

She ran back upstairs to her bedroom where she waited with her 7-month-old baby. Moments later, she heard gunshots. From her bedroom window, Azuela saw a man lying motionless on his stomach. It was Owen.

A deputy who was at the front of the building ran toward the sound of the gunfire and found the wounded sergeant.

The gunman, meanwhile, ran to the front of the building and jumped into Owen's …

Marco Antonio Lopez, a 21-year-old Latino male, died Wednesday, Oct. 5, after being shot in Commerce, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Elias Adame Jr., a 45-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Wednesday, Oct. 5, in the 1100 block of East Young Street in Wilmington, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 12:30 a.m., Adame was hanging out at a friend’s house when the other person went inside to use the restroom, said Los Angeles Police Det. David Cortez.

That's when Adame was shot. Witnesses heard a vehicle speeding away, but it’s unclear whether the shooter got out or shot from inside a vehicle.

Adame was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Demond Tristan Jones, a 28-year-old black man, was stabbed to death Wednesday, Oct. 5, in the 1300 block of West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on the border of Vermont Square, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 2:20 a.m., Jones was on standing the southeast corner of West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Normandie Avenue when people pulled up in a dark-colored SUV, Los Angeles Police Det. Rick Gordon said.

It’s unclear whether a person got out of the vehicle, but shots were fired in Jones’ direction. The car then fled east on West Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, Gordon said.

Jones was pronounced dead at 2:43 a.m. at the scene, according to coroner’s records.

Thomas Wayne Binkley, a 66-year-old white male, died Tuesday, Oct. 4, in Burbank, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Sergio Diaz Acosta, a 25-year-old Latino, was fatally stabbed on Monday, Oct. 3, near the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Pacific Avenue in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

About 2:40 a.m., Long Beach police were called to assist fire officials with a man lying in the street, according to a news release. 

Officers found Acosta with multiple stab wounds to the chest. He was later taken to a hospital where he died at 3;05 a.m., according to coroner’s records. 

Police do not yet have a motive and are pursuing all leads.
