Maximiliano Bernal, a 22-year-old Latino, was pronounced dead on Thursday, Feb. 25, after his body was found at mile marker 7.98 of Sand Canyon Road in Santa Clarita, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Bernal’s body was found after a childhood friend confessed that he killed Bernal and dumped his body just off Sand Canyon Road, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. Eddie Hernandez said. 

David Aldana, a 21-year-old Latino, turned himself in at the San Isidro Port of Entry on the United States-Mexico border Feb. 24, Hernandez said. 

Hernandez said Los Angeles County investigators met with Aldana the following day and he led them to the place where he left Bernal’s body.

“It was basically off the road somewhat at a vehicle turnout area,” Hernandez said. “We probably wouldn’t have found him unless someone happened on the body.”

Roberto Lopez, 26-year-old Latino, was fatally stabbed Thursday Feb. 25, in the 6200 block of Laurel Canyon Boulevard in North Hollywood, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 7 a.m., officers from LAPD’s North Hollywood Division responded to a radio call of a stabbing, according to a news release from the department.

When officers arrived, they found Lopez suffering from a stab wound.

Lopez was pronounced dead at the scene, according to coroner’s records.

Francisco Garcia, a 26-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy Wednesday, Feb. 24, at the corner of Alondra Boulevard and Studebaker Road in Norwalk, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Garcia was in an Acura Integra at a gas pump outside a 7-Eleven  when a deputy noticed the car had been reported stolen from Whittier earlier in the day, Lt. Eddie Hernandez said. 

Deputies were doing extra patrols and checking vehicle license plates in the area because of the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Christopher Bishop as he was shopping at a convenience store the day before, Hernandez said.  

The deputy pulled into the station shortly after 5 p.m., parked behind the Integra and went up to talk to Garcia, who was standing outside the car at the pump, Hernandez said.

Andrew Mendoza, a 24-year-old Latino, died Wednesday, Feb. 24, after he was shot in the 14600 block of Nordhoff Street in the Panorama City neighborhood of Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

On Feb. 23 about 11:40 p.m., officers from the LAPD's Mission Division responded to a call of a shooting, according to a department news release. Officers found Mendoza, who had been wounded by gunfire.

Mendoza was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead on May 24 at 3:02 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Investigators believe that a person walked up, and fired at Mendoza multiple times, then fled in a vehicle.

Christopher Bishop, an 18-year-old Latino, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, after he was shot in the 10900 block of Alondra Boulevard in Norwalk, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Bishop and his father were shopping inside a 7-Eleven store about 4:35 p.m. when he was confronted by a group of young men, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Victor Lewandowski.

“We believe they were gang members,” Lewandowski said of the men. 

Bishop ran out of the store and was chased by the men, one of whom pulled a gun and shot him multiple times in the parking lot, Lewandowski said. 

The gunman ran from the scene, Lewandowski said, and witnesses also reported seeing a white Lexus leaving the scene. 

Bishop was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:11 p.m., according to coroner’s records. His father was not injured, investigators said.

Oswaldo De Jesus Urizar, a 46-year-old Latino, was found dead Wednesday, Feb. 24, after he was shot in the 10400 block of Montara Avenue in South Gate, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Urizar’s sister came to check on him in his studio apartment about 5:24 p.m. after he didn’t respond to repeated text messages and calls, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Eddie Hernandez said. 

When Urizar didn’t answer, his sister used her key to get inside and found him lying face down on his bed, Hernandez said. Urizar was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:35 p.m. with a gunshot wound to his upper torso, according to coroner’s records. 

Urizar was a truck driver who lived alone in the upper level of a house, Hernandez said. Neighbors reported hearing gunshots about 10 p.m. the night before, but they did not call the Sheriff’s Department, he said.

Robert Taylor Bragg, a 74-year-old black male, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, after sustaining blunt force trauma in Inglewood, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Update: The Los Angeles County Medical-Examiner Coroner’s office has changed the mode of this death. It has not been ruled a homicide.

Undetermined Doe #6, a person, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, in Long Beach, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Erik Antonio Juarez, a 24-year-old Latino, was shot to death Tuesday, Feb. 23, in the 1500 block of South Western Avenue in Harvard Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

About 2 p.m., Juarez got into an argument in a marijuana clinic with Jose Eriberto Gonzalez, a 19-year-old Latino, LAPD Lt. John Radtke said. 

Investigators believe the two men were gang members, and Juarez had challenged Gonzalez, Radtke said. 

After the argument, Juarez left the clinic and returned with a baseball bat. When Juarez went to put the bat away, Gonzalez drew a gun and opened fire, Radtke said.

Juarez was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 3:59 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Witnesses later provided police with a description of Gonzalez, who was arrested two days later, Radtke said.

Kenneth Elliot Durden, a 50-year-old black man, was shot and killed Tuesday, Feb. 23, in the 6200 block of South Harvard Avenue in Harvard Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 3:55 p.m., Durden was in the driver’s seat of his Cadillac DeVille when a man approached and fired multiple times, striking Durden, LAPD Det. Dave Garrido said.

The gunman then fled south on South Harvard Avenue in a car, possibly a four-door sedan.

Durden was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 4:33 p.m., according to coroner's records.

Nathaniel Joseph Ancar, a 40-year-old black man, died Tuesday, Feb. 23, after he was shot in the 7400 block of South San Pedro in Florence, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

About 9 p.m., Ancar was driving north on South San Pedro when another vehicle pulled up on the passenger side and a person inside opened fire, LAPD Det. Dave Garrido said.

Ancar, who was in a white Chevrolet Tahoe, was struck multiple times.

The Tahoe crashed into a parked vehicle, then Ancar was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect vehicle was described as a small dark-colored sedan that fled north on South San Pedro.

Larry Galvan, a 27-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Monday, Feb. 22, in the 900 block of South La Verne Avenue in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly after noon, Galvan and his brother, Dennis, were walking south on South La Verne Avenue when they were approached by a man who shot the two, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The gunman then got into the passenger side of a sport utility vehicle and fled north on South La Verne Avenue and out of view.

Galvan and his brother were taken to a hospital, where Galvan was pronounced dead. Coroner's records identified Larry as 32, but family said he was 27.

The brothers were returning to their mother’s home after purchasing a mop, family members told The Times.

Virgil “Quincy” Lee Kennerly, a 34-year-old black man, was shot and killed Monday, Feb. 22, in the 1700 block of East Alondra Boulevard in Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records. 

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were called to the scene about 9:52 p.m. after residents reported hearing gunshots outside a two-story apartment unit, Lt. Victor Lewandowski said. 

When deputies arrived they found Kennerly bleeding and unresponsive from a gunshot wound, Lewandowski said. Kennerly was pronounced dead at the scene at 10 p.m., according to coroner’s records. 

Investigators do not have a motive for the shooting, or any suspect information, Lewandowski said.

Residents reported hearing people arguing outside the apartment building, and then hearing gunfire, but no one provided a description of the shooter.
