A story for every victim

Derrick Deon Hicks, 25

Derrick Deon Hicks, a 25-year-old black man, died on Thursday, April 21, after he was shot at the corner of 89th Street and Budlong Avenue in the Westmont area of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Witnesses told investigators that Hicks and another man were standing on the sidewalk talking  at 6:53 p.m., when the other man pulled a gun and shot Hicks multiple times, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza said.

Hicks fell to the ground and was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:28 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Mendoza said Hicks lived just down the street from where he was shot. “It was his neighborhood, and he was just hanging out,” he said.

The shooter was described as a black male about 20 to 25 years old, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and black pants, Mendoza said.

Witnesses said the shooter ran to a waiting car, driven by another black male, and climbed inside. The car then sped west on 89th Street until it was out of sight, Mendoza said.

The car was described as a late model, white, compact sedan with four doors and tinted windows.
