A story for every victim

Anthony Rodriguez, 39

Anthony Rodriguez, a 39-year-old Latino, died on Sunday, Feb. 9, after he was shot in the 6100 block of Southside Drive in East Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Rodriguez was talking with a friend in front of an acquaintance's house about 10:20 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 8, when two Latino adults walked up, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Derrick Alfred.

The newcomers mentioned their gang affiliation and then began beating Rodriguez with a baseball bat, Alfred said. Rodriguez ran up the driveway to the back of the house, trying to get away, but one of the attackers pulled a gun and fired.

"He tried to get into the house to get away," Alfred sad. "He got to the door, but he couldn't get through."

The gunman and his companion fled from the scene on foot, Alfred said.

Rodriguez was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead after surgery, about six hours later, at 4:08 a.m, according to coroner's records. The cause of death was listed as gunshot wounds to the abdomen.

Alfred said Rodriguez lived in another part of East Los Angeles but was not a stranger to the neighborhood. Investigators don't have a motive for the shooting, he said.
