James Lee Chambers, a 55-year-old Black man, was shot and killed Saturday, Nov. 9, in the 1700 block of West 24th Street in Adams-Normandie, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
About midnight, Chambers was standing in the area when a person shot him, according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department.
The person shot Chambers from behind a tree, then was seen running south on South Congress Avenue from West 24th Street.
Chambers died at the scene.
Patrice Chambers, James’ sister, said that her brother was born and raised in the area. James Chambers was funny, loved to dance and encouraged the youth at the neighborhood park to do well in school, she said.
James was known for his generosity and would cook food for people hanging out at the park.
“He loved the community,” Patrice Chambers said.

Daniel David Cortez, a 15-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Monday, Feb. 25, in the 2200 block of South Budlong Avenue in Adams-Normandie, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s records.
Daniel was walking home from school when he was shot about 3:45 p.m., said Los Angeles Police Officer Jonathan Kincaid.
Kincaid declined to specify whether a gunman got out of a vehicle or walked up to Daniel and shot him.
Daniel was a ninth-grade student at West Adams Preparatory High School, according to police and staff at the school.
Derick Rivera, an 18-year-old Latino, has been charged with one count of murder with gun allegations, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
Police declined to state why Daniel may have been targeted, but said the killing was not gang related.

Johnny Sandoval, a 27-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Wednesday, Oct. 18, in the 2900 block of South La Salle Avenue in Adams-Normandie, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Sandoval was walking south in an alley with two others around 7:15 p.m. when he was shot, Los Angeles Police Det. Dave Garrido said.
Sandoval was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:29 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
The shooting suspects, believed to be the people with whom Sandoval was walking, ran north in the alley then east on West 29th Street, Garrido said.

Daniel Mariscal, a 20-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Friday, Aug. 18, in the 2500 block of South La Salle Avenue in the Adams-Normandie neighborhood of South Los Angeles, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 7:15 p.m., Mariscal was driving a gray Honda Accord with three others when they stopped alongside a white sedan, Los Angeles Police Det. Dave Garrido said.
A passenger in the Honda confronted the driver of the white vehicle, which sped away, Garrido said. The Honda followed.
The white vehicle then made a U-turn, and, as it pulled alongside the Honda, a person inside the car fired multiple gunshots at the group in the Accord.
Mariscal was struck by gunfire and was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:30 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
The three other people in the Honda were not injured.

Dina Rebecca Enriquez, a 24-year-old Latina, was shot and killed Friday, March 10, in the 3100 block of Kenwood Avenue in Adams-Normandie, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Enriquez got into an argument with her longtime partner, who pulled out a gun and shot her in an apartment bedroom shortly before 3:30 p.m., according to Los Angeles Police Det. Dave Garrido.
The couple’s children, 2 and 6 years old, were in the apartment when their mother was shot, Garrido said.
Enriquez was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:38 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
Police at the scene arrested Steven Alexis Vargas, a 26-year-old Latino, on suspicion of murder.
Vargas was charged March 14 with one count of murder, two counts of child abuse, one count of assault with a semiautomatic firearm and one count of discharge of a firearm with gross negligence, according to the Los Angeles County …
Bradford Wrenwick Smith Jr., a 24-year-old black man, was shot and killed Monday, March 14, in the 1800 block of West Adams Boulevard in Adams-Normandie, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 6:45 p.m., Smith was working under the hood of his car, LAPD Det. Dave Garrido said.
A light-colored truck pulled up and a person inside began shooting, striking Smith multiple times, Garrido said.
The truck fled west on West Adams Boulevard.
Smith was pronounced dead at the scene at 7 p.m., according to coroner's records.

Emmanuel Arce, a 30-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, Sept. 27, in the 2500 block of South Vermont Avenue in Adams-Normandie, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 5 a.m., Arce and a friend were in the drive-thru at Jack In The Box waiting for their order behind a light-colored sedan when Arce grew impatient, said LAPD Det. Dave Garrido.
Arce got out of his car and walked up to the drive-thru window, and the front passenger of the light-colored sedan got out of his car and shot Arce. The sedan then fled the scene.
Arce was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:28 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

Maria Elena Rivas-Lomeli, a 62-year-old Latina, was fatally stabbed Monday, Dec. 22, in the 1400 block of West Adams Boulevard in Adams-Normandie, according to police and Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Rivas-Lomeli had just purchased groceries from a nearby Ralphs supermarket and was walking home about 6:30 p.m. when a person attacked her from behind and stabbed her, police said.
LAPD detectives said the supermarket’s security camera video shows that Rivas paid for her groceries with a large wallet. The purse and the wallet were missing after the attack, police said.
Rivas-Lomeli was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 7:29 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
Though the attack happened at rush hour, no witnesses have come forward, police said.
“There was absolutely no reason why such an innocent lady walking home to her family should be killed in the street,” LAPD Capt. Peter Whittingham told KABC-TV. …
James Jay Smith, a 20-year-old black man, was shot and killed Monday, Sept. 1, near West Adams Boulevard and South Dalton Avenue in Adams-Normandie, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Smith and a 17-year-old were standing at an intersection when a person walked up to the two and began shooting, according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department.
Smith was pronounced dead on the way to the hospital. The 17-year-old was wounded but expected to survive.
The gunman and another man, described by police as two male blacks, fled in a light-colored vehicle.
