Chyong Jen Tsai, a 76-year-old Asian woman, was pronounced dead on Tuesday, April 9, after she was found unconscious in the 300 block of of East Forest Avenue in Arcadia, according to Los Angeles County medical examiner-coroner records.
Arcadia police went to Tsai's home after receiving a call about a person down, and found her lying in her backyard not breathing, according to a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department news release.
Tsai and her husband, who was traveling out of country, are building a granny flat on their property, the Pasadena Star-Times reported. It was one of the construction workers who found her lying in her backyard, not breathing, shortly before 7 a.m.
She was pronounced dead at the scene at 7 a.m., but investigators say it's not clear how she died, The Times reported.

Cherry Chilei Liu, a 50-year-old Asian woman, was fatally shot on Wednesday, Aug. 1, in the 800 block of Sunset Boulevard in Arcadia, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Liu had left her apartment about 8 a.m. and was walking downstairs to her car when her estranged husband began shooting at her from a hiding place, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Derrick Alfred.
“It looks like he had been lying in wait for her in the laundry room below her apartment,” Alfred said. “As she walked by, it looks like he opened fire on her and then followed her out to the driveway where he fired several more rounds, striking her. And then he fired a single round into his own head.”
Liu was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:58 a.m., according to coroner’s records. The cause of death was listed as multiple gunshot wounds.

Darius Smith, a 15-year-old black teenager, died Saturday, May 27, after he was shot by an off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Protection officer on North 1st Avenue just south of East Colorado Boulevard in Arcadia, according to Los Angeles County authorities.
Smith, who lived in Pasadena, was riding on the Gold Line Metro Rail with two other boys, 14 and 15, about 8 p.m. on Friday, May 26, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. John Corina.
Family members told investigators the boys were going to the Monrovia Street Fair that evening, Corina said. But Smith and his companions got off at the Arcadia station, behind another exiting passenger — a federal Customs and Border Protection officer who was dressed in plain clothes and carrying a backpack and another bag, said Corina.

Anthony Lin, a 15-year-old Asian boy, died of blunt force trauma Friday, Jan. 22, in the 400 block of Fairview Avenue in Arcadia, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department investigators believe Lin and his 16-year-old brother, William, were sleeping in their family’s three-story townhouse when they were struck on their heads with a heavy object and killed, said Lt. Eddie Hernandez.
The boys weren’t discovered until around noon, when their mother came to wake them up. She found William Lin first in his second-floor bedroom and called 911, Hernandez said. She and the paramedics found Anthony a short time later in his third-floor bedroom with similar injuries.
Both boys were pronounced dead at the scene at 12:53 p.m., according to coroner’s records. They were their parents’ only children, Hernandez said.

Yue Zhao, a 56-year-old Chinese man, was shot and killed Sunday, May 31, in the 1000 block of South 5th Avenue in Arcadia, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Zhao was walking south on South 5th about 9 a.m. when a white sedan pulled up behind him and the driver opened fire, said Lt. Tom Cullen of the Arcadia Police Department.
When Zhao tried to run away, the driver exited the car and fired several more shots at him.
Security cameras from nearby homes captured the incident, Cullen said. Zhao, who suffered a gunshot wound to the chest, was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:47 a.m., said Ed Winter, assistant chief of investigations for the coroner’s office.
Police are still searching for suspects and have not identified a motive or any gang connection, Cullen said.

Xiaolin Li, a 41-year-old Asian woman, was stabbed to death Tuesday, Jan. 7, in the 900 block of Arcadia Avenue in Arcadia, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 8:25 a.m., police received a report of a woman not breathing at an apartment complex. When officers went inside, they found Li with multiple stab wounds.
Li was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 9:22 a.m., said Ed Winter, a coroner’s spokesman.
Witnesses directed police to Li Zhu, 68, who had left the building before police arrived. Investigators determined that Zhu was Li’s father-in-law and that the two lived with other family members at the apartment.
Police believe Zhu stabbed Li over an ongoing dispute, and they arrested Zhu on suspicion of murder that day.
On Jan. 8, Zhu apparently committed suicide at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, according to an L.A. County Sheriff’s Department news …
Noe Vasquez, a 35-year-old Latino, was found dead Thursday, May 10, after being shot in the 700 block of Santa Anita Avenue in Arcadia, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Vasquez's body was discovered near the Mile 27 marker on Angeles Crest Highway above La Cañada Flintridge early Thursday morning, prompting authorities to close the road for most of the day.
Coroner's records show the victim suffered several gunshot wounds to his body.
Authorities did not release any additional information about the killing.

Anthony Berry, a 18-year-old man, was stabbed to death Tuesday, Dec. 20, in the 1300 block of South Golden West Avenue in Arcadia, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Officials responded to reports at about 9:30 p.m., and Berry was transported to Huntington Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after, reported the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. According to coroner’s records, Berry died from a stab wound to his chest.
Berry, while parked outside a strip mall waiting for a friend, was stabbed after he got into a verbal argument with two employees from the Money Pot Shabu Shabu restaurant in the strip mall, reported the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. Witnesses pointed out the suspects, and the knife believed to have been used in the stabbing was found inside the Money Pot.
Police have arrested Juan L. Lorenzo, 31, in connection to the stabbing. He pleaded not guilty …
Brian Kelly, a 47-year-old white man, was beaten to death Wednesday, Aug. 18, in the 800 block of Fairview Avenue in Arcadia, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Kelly's body found by Arcadia police officers about 5:20 p.m. at an apartment, authorities said. He had suffered blunt -force trauma to the head, according to coroner's records.
Evidence collected during the course of the investigation connected Kelly’s younger brother, Michael Thomas Kelly, to the killing, said Arcadia Police Chief Robert P. Sanderson.
Three days after the incident, Arcadia police arrested Michael Thomas Kelly, a 44-year-old white man. He is being held at the Twin Towers jail in downtown Los Angeles in lieu of $1-million bail.
