Jason Alvarez, 29, a Latino man, was shot in the chest at 2500 Houston St. in LAPD's Hollenbeck area at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 2, and died later at a hospital. He and a companion had stopped on a street corner where some Hispanic men or youths were engaged in underground business. Alvarez and his friend got out of the car to talk to them. One of the men they were talking to decided to rob Alvarez and his friend of jewelry. The man then shot Alvarez and told his friend to drive off.

An unborn child was discovered during an autopsy on Rachel Campus, an 18-year-old black woman, who had been choked and dumped in an alley in the 2000 block of 1st St. in Boyle Heights, according to the Los Angeles County coroner.

Both deaths are listed as homicides.

Rachel Tyneia-Alicia Campus, an 18-year-old black woman, was found dead Monday, Nov. 19 in an alley in the 2000 block of 1st St. in Boyle Heights, according to the Los Angeles County coroner.

A passer-by discovered her body and coroner's officials determined she had been choked and then dumped at the location, said Craig Harvey, chief coroner's investigator.

During her autopsy, they discovered a fetus. Both deaths were listed a homicides.

Miguel Morales, 40, a Latino man, was shot dead in the driver's seat of his bandit "on time" taxicab in the 500 block of Sloat Street in Boyle Heights at about 3:45 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 27. Officers got a call of a shooting, and found Morales with a gunshot wound to the head.

LAPD Hollenbeck detectives are investigating.

Omar Eliceo Bourdet, 22, a Latino man, died at California Hospital early Sunday, Oct. 14, after being shot at a quinceanera party at a rental hall in the 2800 block of East Olympic Boulevard in LAPD's Hollenbeck Division. The shooting took place at about 11:40 p.m. Oct. 13, Det. Gustavo Barrientos of Hollenbeck said.

A brawl had erupted at the party, and spilled outside, where someone pulled out a gun and fired. Bourdet was the only one struck. Other partygoers drove him to California Hospital, left him there and fled, according to detectives. Trauma surgeons were unable to save him. Since doctors had been left in the dark about where their patient had come from, or who had dropped him off, it took some time for police to piece together what happened. Bourdet was the father of an 8-month-old baby, and unemployed, police said.

Fernando Sedano Jr., 22, a Latino young man, was shot in the chest at 6th and Lorena; he was taken to White Memorial hospital, where he died on Sunday, Sept. 30. The time of death was 3:07 a.m.

According to Hollenbeck Det. D.W. Fields, police had documented Sedano as a member of one of Hollenbeck's traditional, multi-generational Latino gangs. The police gave this version of the shooting: Sedano was out that night, robbing illegal immigrants. He committed at least one robbery, using a weapon, then attempted to commit another. But the target he chose, believed to be an adult male Latino immigrant, was armed. When Sedano tried to strong-arm him, the immigrant pulled out a gun and shot him, then fled the scene.

Brent McKinney, a 45-year-old black man, was shot and killed by California Highway Patrol officers at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, on the connector ramp between the eastbound Interstate 10 and the northbound Interstate 5 at South Boyle Avenue in Boyle Heights. The officers had faced off with the man at a homeless encampment under the freeway, where he had threatened them with a machete, CHP officials said. The man and the officers moved to the ramp, where both officers shot him. 

Augusto Emiliano Zapata, 26, a Latino man, was shot in the chest at 1019 Spence St. in Boyle Heights and died at 3:05 a.m. Saturday, June 16.

Carlos Lopez, 21, was struck in the head by gunfire at 2439 E. Cesar Chavez Ave. in Boyle Heights and died at 6:49 p.m. Thursday, June 14.

Jairo Martinez, 19, a Latino young man, was killed Saturday, June 9,  in a shooting in the 2400 block of Michigan Street in Boyle Heights. He died at the scene. "Gang-related" is how LAPD Hollenbeck detectives described the shooting, adding that both the victim and suspects are believed to have been involved in gangs.

Martinez's family declined an interview. Male friends about his age hovered on a porch next to this shrine, below. When it was suggested that they might go inside, or in back of the property, for safety, one said: "I know. But we can't leave him alone out here.".

Update: An arrest has been made in this case. Hollenbeck Det.Mike Marin and partner cleared it with the arrest of 21-year-old NelsonTurcios, a Latino man.

Ruben Darrell Duran, a 56-year-old Latino male, died Monday, June 4, in Boyle Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Henry Rodriguez Jr., 44, a Latino man, was shot at 504 N. St. Louis Street in Boyle Heights in LAPD's Hollenbeck Division, and died at 5:25 p.m. Saturday, June 2.

Rodriguez was standing with a group of transients in the street.  A car drove up. Someone yelled "Where you from?" Some answer came back from the group, but the response was gunfire. Rodriguez was struck and transported to County-USC, where he died.

Alfredo Morales, 26, a Latino man, was shot multiple times at 3654 E. Olympic Boulevard and died at 2:56 a.m. Friday, May 18. He was standing in a parking lot when a suspect came up on foot, shot in him the neck, and fled in a late 1980s Nissan. Morales was taken to County-USC hospital, where he died.

Update: LAPD Hollenbeck detectives have cleared this case. At least one Latino suspect was arrested. By chance, Morales and his friends had run into rival gang members while shopping at the Food-4-Less, and a confrontation preceded the shooting.

Marcos Norberto, a 21-year-old Latino male, died Sunday, May 6, after being shot in Boyle Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Alan Torres, 18, a Latino young man, was struck by gunfire in the 3100 block of Gleason Avenue in LAPD's Hollenbeck Division, and died at 6:02 p.m. May 4. A 17-year-old Latino youth walked up and shot him many times. Witnesses came forward, and a 17-year-old Latino youth was arrested and charged, Det. Gustavo Barrientos of Hollenbeck said. Detectives believe he shot Torres because of some dispute.
