Tauvaaga “Judy” Lauvai, a 53-year-old woman of Samoan descent, died Saturday, June 16, after she was shot in the 22700 block of Island Avenue in Carson, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Lauvai, a native of Carson, lived in Tempe, Ariz., but she and her husband had returned to Carson to visit family over Father’s Day weekend, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
Her family had gathered on the front porch of her mother-in-law’s home shortly before 9 p.m. when a light-colored four-door sedan stopped in front of the house, Mendoza said.
Someone inside the car began shooting toward the porch, and Lauvai was struck by the gunfire, he said.
Investigators don’t have a motive for the shooting, “but we don’t believe she was the target. We believe this was just a random shooting,” Mendoza said ...
Donnelle Ali Taufaao, a 20-year-old Samoan man, was shot and killed Saturday, March 17, in the 600 block of East University Drive in Carson, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Taufaao was standing outside a strip mall liquor store around 9:45 p.m. when a car drove up and he started talking to the man inside, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Derrick Alfred said.
“The conversation got heated, and the witnesses said they could see it going sideways. They ran inside the liquor store, heard the shots and then came out and saw the victim on the ground,” Alfred said.
Taufaao was pronounced dead at the scene at 10 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
The coroner’s office said Taufaao was from Lynwood, but investigators think he most recently was living near where he was shot.

Paul Lawrence Freeman, a 57-year-old black man, died Thursday, Feb. 11, after he was shot in the 19800 block of South Leapwood Avenue in Carson, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Freeman was at home, where he lived with his brother and mother, when he and his brother, Rodney Freeman, 56, got into an argument around 2 p.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Joe Mendoza.
Paul Freeman picked up a baseball bat and began swinging it at his brother, Mendoza said.
The younger brother had a gun, Mendoza said, and when his brother hit him with the baseball bat, Rodney Freeman shot him in the chest.
Paul Freeman was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:47 p.m., according to coroner’s records.
