Andrew Lee Bender, a 43-year-old Black male, died Monday, Dec. 6, after being shot near 16337 S. Harris Ave. in East Compton, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Benny Ray Ferguson, a 69-year-old Black male, died Saturday, Sept. 18, after being stabbed near 14528 S. Harris Ave. in East Compton, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Rebecca Herrera Navarrete, a 46-year-old Latino female, died Tuesday, Sept. 7, after sustaining blunt force trauma near South Washington Avenue & East Compton Boulevard in East Compton, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Ivan Villarreal, a 14-year-old Latino male, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, after being shot near S/O 4248 E. San Luis St. in East Compton, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Juan Miguel Cardona, a 44-year-old Latino male, died Monday, June 21, after being shot near East Linsley Street & South White Avenue in East Compton, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Salvador Barboza Jr., a 34-year-old Latino male, died Saturday, May 8, after being shot near 15120 S. Lime Ave. in East Compton, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Juan Pablo Barajas, a 22-year-old Latino male, died Saturday, June 15, after being shot in East Compton, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Jeffrey Phillip Jackson, a 37-year-old Black male, died Sunday, April 7, after being shot near the 13000 block of South Cookacre Avenue in East Compton, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.

Melanie Ann Cunningham, a 58-year-old white woman, was pronounced dead on Monday, Dec. 17, after she was fatally stabbed in the 15600 block of South Frailey Avenue in East Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records. 

Investigators were called to Cunningham's home after her longtime husband, Henry Cunningham, a 66-year-old black man, called the Los Angeles Police Department's Harbor Division to report he had stabbed his wife, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Det. Kevin Acebedo. 

Police officers took Henry into custody, and then called the sheriff's Homicide Bureau when they realized the case was in their jurisdiction, Acebedo said.

According to a news release from the Los Angeles County district attorney's office, Cunningham and her 1-year-old granddaughter were asleep inside her bedroom when her husband grabbed a kitchen knife and slit her throat.

Angel Zavala, a 19-year-old Latino male, died Tuesday, May 9, after being shot in East Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

James Jeter, a 42-year-old black male, died Thursday, Oct. 20, after being shot in East Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

David Coborubio, a 31-year-old Latino male, died Thursday, Aug. 25, after being shot in East Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Jose Enrique Lopez, a 30-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Tuesday, May 24, in the 4600 block of East Rosecrans Avenue in East Compton, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m., Lopez was walking alone along East Rosecrans Avenue when he was shot, said Lt. John Corina with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Lopez was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:20 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Witnessed later told authorities that they heard gunshots and saw Lopez run across the street and collapse on the sidewalk.

Detectives are still working on a description of the gunman and are unsure about the motive, Corina said.

Lopez’s family has set up a fundraising page to help with burial expenses.
