Fred Contreras Jr., a 49-year-old Latino male, died Monday, March 25, after sustaining blunt force trauma near 1525 N. Alvarado St. in Echo Park, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner's records.
Jose Luis Rodriguez, a 50-year-old Latino male, died Monday, Aug. 6, after sustaining blunt force trauma in Echo Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
William Orlando Perea, a 36-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Monday, Oct. 17, in the 1400 block of Mohawk Street in Echo Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Perea was riding his bicycle on Mohawk Street when he was gunned down, Los Angeles police Capt. Phillip Smith told residents at a meeting Friday. Police believe the shooter was probably in a moving vehicle because the three shell casings found at the scene were spaced out in a line.
Investigators do not believe Perea was a gang member. He may have been homeless and had a history of drug abuse, Smith said, so the killing could have been drug-related.
Several neighbors reported hearing four or five shots, but no one who saw the shooting has come forward, and there is no description of the shooter’s vehicle.

Yonatan Daniel Aguilar, a 11-year-old Latino male, died Monday, Aug. 22, after sustaining blunt force trauma in Echo Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Hugo Castillo, a 28-year-old Latino, was stabbed to death Thursday, July 21, at Echo Park near Lemoyne Street and Park Avenue, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 10:35 p.m., Castillo and a few friends were hanging out near the bathrooms of the park when one of the friends went inside, said Los Angeles Police Det. Ray Martinez. A man then emerged from a stall and stabbed Castillo.
Police believe the attacker may have overheard the group talking and mistakenly thought that the men were making fun of him, Martinez said.
After the stabbing, the assailant ran northbound on Lemoyne.
Castillo was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:25 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Franklin Murrell Rogers, a 48-year-old white man, was found dead Friday, July 8, in the 1100 block of Waterloo Street in Echo Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Shortly before noon, Rogers was strangled at a sober living home, police said. Rogers was pronounced dead at 11:47 a.m. at the scene, according to coroner’s records.
Nicholas James Bowling, a 28-year-old white man, was arrested on suspicion of murder in the slaying. Bowling and Rogers were romantically involved, police said.
Bowling pleaded not guilty to one count of murder July 12, according to court records.
Friends mourned Rogers’ violent death.
“He was a loving, gentle and kind soul,” Thomas Harris told KTLA-TV. “I know that most people would be grateful for the experience of his friendship.”
Bowling has a criminal history with several arrests, including a February 2012 arrest on suspicion of domestic violence, according to jail records. …
Oscar Sandoval Jr., a 19-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, Nov. 29, in the 1300 block of Allesandro Street in Echo Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Officers responding to a “shots fired” radio call discovered Sandoval about 10:15 p.m. in the driver’s seat of a Nissan Xterra, according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department.
Sandoval appeared to have suffered a gunshot wound to the head. Paramedics responded and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:40 p.m., according to the coroner’s office.

Michael Robert Hannah, a 20-year-old Latino, was found with gunshot wounds Saturday, Aug. 8 in the 1600 block of Delta Street in Echo Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 2:50 a.m. police responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon in the area and found Hannah with a gunshot wound to the head, according to a news release from the Los Angeles Police Department.
Hannah was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m. at the scene, according to coroner’s records.
Officer Ryan Watterson said police were hoping that witnesses would call to provide details about the shooting.
“It’s a tough one because it was so late at night …” he said.

Ricardo Nunez, a 35-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Sunday, Feb. 15 in the 300 block of Douglas Street in Echo Park, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Shortly before 8:30 a.m., Nunez was standing outside a home when a vehicle drove by and a person inside fired several rounds, LAPD Det. Ray Martinez said.
Nunez was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 11:44 a.m., said Ed Winter, assistant chief of investigations for the coroner’s office.
