Richard Tovalin, a 31-year-old Latino, was fatally shot on Sunday, June 30, in the 400 block of Tonopah Avenue in La Puente, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner records.
Tovalin was sitting in his parked car, talking to two friends in the driveway of a home, when a small gray or silver-colored SUV drove up around 6:30 p.m. and a man with a gun got out and opened fire, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Brandon Dean.
The gunfire struck all three men, Dean said. Tovalin was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:47 p.m., according to coroner's records The cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds.
One of his friends, a 25-year-old Latino from La Puente, was standing outside the car and was shot at least twice in the upper torso, Dean said. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition but is expected to survive.

David Raymond Ontiveros, a 43-year-old Latino, died Tuesday, Feb. 9, about two months after he was shot in the 700 block of Tamar Drive in La Puente, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
On Dec. 12, 2015, Ontiveros was working on a car outside his home, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Lt. Victor Lewandowski. The vehicle was parked on the street, Lewandowski said, and when a car drove by, Ontiveros motioned for it to slow down.
The driver of the car stopped and confronted Ontiveros, Lewandowski said. The two got into an argument, he said, and the suspect pulled out a gun and shot Ontiveros multiple times.
Ontiveros was taken to a hospital, where he never regained consciousness, Lewandowski said. He was pronounced dead at 5:58 a.m. on Feb 9.
Investigators don’t have a description of the shooter or his car, Lewandowski said.

Jose Chacon, a 28-year-old Latino, was found fatally stabbed Wednesday, Feb. 12, in the 15900 block of Old Valley Boulevard in La Puente, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
About 2:45 a.m. deputies received a call of a man down and discovered Chacon in a parking lot unconscious and bleeding, said Lt. Steve Jauch with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Chacon was pronounced dead at 3:04 a.m., said Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner’s office.

Tomas Salas, a 23-year-old white man, was fatally shot Thursday, Aug. 8, in the 15800 block of Sierra Vista Court in La Puente, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Salas was standing in the driveway of an apartment complex talking on his cellphone about 11:13 p.m. when people in the area heard a gunshot, said Lt. Holly Francisco with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department Homicide Bureau.
A person went outside and found Salas on the ground, Francisco said.
Salas died at the scene at 11:24 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Ceaser Joe Mendoza, a 24-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy Saturday June 22, 2013, in the 15613 block of Loukelton Street in La Puente, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Deputy Chad Sessman and his partner saw a gray Nissan Altima going west on Loukelton Street about 9:45 p.m. The deputies illuminated the car with a spotlight and saw that the right front passenger was "slouched low" in the seat and wearing a blue baseball cap, according to a letter from the Justice System Integrity Division of the district attorney's office, which reviews each officer-involved shooting in the county.
