Arturo Martin Sampiero, a 29-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Friday, May 24, in the 4500 block of West 173rd Street in Lawndale, according to Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner records.
Sampiero had gone to the store and was returning home in a Lyft around 1:30 a.m. when someone confronted him as he was getting out of the car, said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Derrick Alfred.
The driver heard "some kind of exchange involving [Sampiero's] status in a gang," Alfred said. "Words were exchanged, gunfire erupted and the driver said, 'I'm getting out of here,' and took off, although he did come back."
Sampiero was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:11 a.m., according to coroner's records. The cause of death was listed as gunshot wounds to the back.

Luis Fernando Cuba, a 47-year-old Latino male, died Saturday, Dec. 1, after sustaining blunt force trauma in Lawndale, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Michael Ali Hammonds, a 20-year-old black man, was fatally shot on Sunday, Nov. 4, in the 16200 block of Hawthorne Boulevard in Lawndale, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Hammonds, an aspiring rap singer from Hyde Park, was with longtime friend Daevion Johnson, 21, and a group of other people accompanying a neighborhood rapper who had rented space at a studio, said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Martindale.
During a commotion when he thought he and his friends were going to be attacked, Johnson fired a gun three times and accidentally struck his friend Hammonds, the only injury, Martindale said.
Hammonds was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:47 p.m. The cause of death was listed as a gunshot wound to the chest.
Martindale provided details of the events of the evening, which he said involved two fights and much confusion.

Justina Pina, a 39-year-old Latina, was shot and killed Monday, March 12, in the 14600 block of Eastwood Avenue in Lawndale, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Pina and Francisco Saulcedo, 44, were pronounced dead at the scene just before 10 a.m., said Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy Lillian Peck.
Officials said the deaths were being investigated as a possible murder-suicide. Authorities did not reveal the relationship between Pina and Saulcedo.
Coroner's records show Pina died from a gunshot wound to the head.
According to The Times' Homicide Report, 36 homicides have occurred within a two-mile radius of Monday's incident.

Robert Jaramillo, a 24-year-old Latino, was stabbed to death Saturday, March 10, near Hawthorne Boulevard and Marine Avenue in Lawndale, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Sheriff's homicide Det. G. Sloan, who is handling the case, said witnesses observed Jaramillo being assaulted about 10:50 p.m.
After he collapsed, the witnesses called 911. Paramedics arrived and the victim was taken to Harbor UCLA Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
There have been no arrests made in connection with the death.
Citing the ongoing investigation, Sloan declined to provide a description of the assailant.

Israel Tovar, a 51-year-old Latino, died Monday, Sept. 5, after suffering trauma in the 15200 block of Prarie Avenue in Lawndale, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.

Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner's office, said Tovar's body was found about 12:20 a.m. Authorities were called and the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
Coroner's records show he suffered blunt-force trauma to the head and neck.
Winter said a suspect was later discovered covered in blood and confessed to killing Tovar. That person is in custody, Winter said, but he did not have the suspect's name.
The Times has contacted investigators to obtain additional information about the case and will post an update as soon as details become available.

Lisa Brown, a 42-year-old black woman, was shot and killed Wednesday, May 4, in the 4000 block of West Rosecrans Avenue in Lawndale, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Ed Winter, spokesman for the coroner's office, said Brown was the victim of a murder-suicide.
Authorities arrived at a residence and found Brown with a fatal gunshot wound to the head. A man was also discovered shot to death, Winter said.
During the investigation, Winter said authorities determined that the man killed Brown before shooting himself.
Winter had no other information about the incident.

James Dukes, a 41-year-old white man, was stabbed to death Wednesday, March 30, in the 4600 block of 164th Street in Lawndale, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Dukes was attacked about 3:45 p.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.
Rescue personnel pronounced him dead at the scene. According to coroner's records, he was stabbed more than nine times.
At least nine homicides have been reported in Lawndale since January 2007, according to the Times Homicide Report database.

Eileen Garnreiter, a 22-year-old white woman, was stabbed to death Saturday, Jan. 8, in the 4100 block of Rosecrans Avenue in Lawndale, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Garnreiter was found with several stab wounds after a domestic dispute about 1:30 a.m., said officials with the L.A. County Sheriff's Department. She had been killed with a kitchen knife.
Tymarc Daimarque Warren, her live-in boyfriend and father of their 3-week-old daughter, was at the scene and appeared to be suffering from self-inflicted, superficial cuts to his wrists that were not life-threatening, officials said.
Warren, a 25-year-old black man, was arrested in connection with Garnreiter's death and booked at the South Los Angeles sheriff’s station.
He is being held at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in lieu of $1-million bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 3 at the Torrance Municipal Court.
