Sandra Charlene Jackson, a 59-year-old white woman, was pronounced dead Saturday, Oct. 6, after she was shot in the 1400 block of West McKinley Avenue in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Her adult children asked Pomona police to check her residence that morning because they couldn't reach their parents, said Sgt. Jon Edson.
When officers entered the home, they found Jackson and her husband, Vernon Cary Jackson, a 62-year-old white male, in their bedroom, lying on the bed, Edson said.
Jackson lay on her side, with a shotgun wound to the back, according to coroner's records.
Her husband lay beside her with a shotgun wound to the chest. A shotgun was found on the floor on his side of the bed, according to coroner's records, and his death was ruled a suicide.

Ernest Michael Valdes, a 71-year-old Latino, was fatally injured on Tuesday, Oct. 2, in the 10 block of Blackbird Lane in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Valdes was at home with his two adult sons, in the townhouse where they all lived, when he got into an argument with one of his sons about 9:30 a.m., said Pomona police Sgt. Jon Edson.
The son, Sergio Valdes, 43, “was alleging that his father took his wallet,” Edson said.
At some point during the argument, Sergio Valdes allegedly got a meat cleaver and began attacking his father, according to a news release from the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.

Jay Jesse Espinosa, a 19-year-old Latino, was fatally shot on Sunday, Sept. 23, in the 100 block of East Fourth Street in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Espinosa, a resident of San Bernardino, came to downtown Pomona on Saturday night to see a friend who was DJing at a local club, said Pomona Police Sgt. Jon Edson.
Around 2 a.m. on Sunday, he and some friends were crossing the street to go to their cars when they were nearly struck by a dark-colored SUV, Edson said.

Robert Salinas Jr., a 37-year-old Latino, was fatally shot on Sunday, Aug. 12, in the 100 block of East First Street in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner's records.
Pomona police officers were called to the east end of the train platform at Pomona Station around 4:30 a.m. regarding two men lying unresponsive on the platform, said Pomona Police Sgt. Brian Hagerty. A homeless man had spotted the bodies and went to a nearby business for help, he said.
The officers found two homeless men, Salinas and Jeremy Alexander Henness, a 31-year-old white man, with multiple gunshot wounds, Hagerty said.

Nathan Daniel Ware, a 34-year-old black man, was shot and killed Friday, July 13, in the 1400 block of Edgehill Drive in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Ware was outside near his home when someone in a vehicle shot him multiple times about 8 p.m., said Pomona Police Sgt. Brian Hagerty.
Ware was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:37 p.m., according to coroner's records.
Investigators aren’t sure what Ware was doing before the shooting, Hagerty said. “We don’t really have a lot of information on this.”
Investigators are trying to identify the suspect vehicle, but don’t have a description they can share, Hagerty said.

Alex Lopez III, a 40-year-old Latino, died Saturday, June 30, after he was stabbed in the 400 block of West Holt Avenue in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Lopez was with a group of people in a rear alley behind 470 W. Holt Ave., just east of Rebecca Street, when he got into an argument with another man shortly after noon, said Pomona Police Sgt. Brian Hagerty.
The man became angry and stabbed Lopez several times before running away toward Holt Avenue, Hagerty said.
When officers arrived around 12:30 p.m., they found Lopez lying in a pool of blood, Hagerty said. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2 p.m., according to coroner’s records.

Mark Manlapaz, a 36-year-old man of Filipino descent, died Friday, June 29, after he was stabbed in the 3500 block of Pomona Boulevard in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators.
Manlapaz was working one of two full-time jobs, as a security officer for Cal Poly Pomona University, when he was stabbed and his throat was slashed around 4:30 p.m., according to Sgt. Howard Cooper.
Investigators found Manlapaz in the front seat of his work truck in a parking lot on the south side of Pomona Boulevard, just south of West Temple Avenue, Cooper said. A film was being shot in the area, Cooper said, and Manlapaz was monitoring traffic to keep unwanted people from coming on the set.
Manlapaz was pronounced dead at the scene, Cooper said. An autopsy is still pending.

Rodney Lee Hunter Jr., a 27-year-old black man, was killed by police officers on Friday, June 29, in the 4100 block of South University Drive in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Hunter was a custodian at Cal Poly Pomona and a suspect in a stabbing that killed university security officer Mark Manlapaz, 36, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Howard Cooper.

Guillermo Ceja, a 20-year-old Latino, was fatally shot Sunday, June 24, near Fanshaw Avenue and Vamana Street in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records.
Ceja, who lived in the area, was in a car with other people that evening when they got into a confrontation with someone in another car, said Pomona Police Sgt. Brian Hagerty.
Witnesses said Ceja had gotten out of his friends’ car and was walking toward the other vehicle when someone in the other car began shooting.
Ceja was shot, but was able to get back into his car, Hagerty said. The suspect car drove away, and the driver in Ceja’s car headed south; Ceja’s body was spotted lying in the road at Aliso Street and Westwood Place, about two miles south of the shooting site.

Joel Arturo Gonzalez, a 39-year-old Latino, died Monday, May 21, after he was shot on Cordova Street in Pomona, according to Los Angeles County coroner’s records and Pomona Police.
Gonzalez was driving to a store near his home shortly before 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 20, when someone began shooting at his vehicle outside Montvue Park, Pomona Police Sgt. Bert Sanchez said.
A Little League game had just ended at the park, Sanchez said, and people were milling about. Surveillance cameras and witness accounts indicate the gunfire came from people who had gotten out of a dark, mid-sized, four-door vehicle that was stopped next to the park, Sanchez said.
